Throughout her academic career, Dr. Lappen earned her medical degree from the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California in 1976. She then went on to serve complete her internship, residency, and fellowship at the University of Colorado Health Science Center in 1977, 1978, and 1981, respectively. This was followed by a residency at Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago in 1983, and a fellowship at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in 1984. 

With an outstanding commitment to her specialty, the doctor is board-certified in both pediatrics and pediatric cardiology by the American Board of Pediatrics, which is an independent and nonprofit organization that was founded in 1933. She is also a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology.
