Get to know Nephrologist Dr. Abida Zafar, who serves patients throughout the State of Michigan.

A specialist in the field of nephrology, Dr. Zafar joined the St. Clair Nephrology team in 2005. She sees patients at the following locations in Michigan: Port Huron, East China, Deckerville, Fresenius – Port Huron, and Fresenius – Sandusky.

“I strive to treat my patients with compassion and work together with them to overcome their fears and face the chronicity and challenges of various diseases” expressed the doctor. 

St. Clair Nephrology is a specialty medical practice with offices across the greater Metro-Detroit area. Its primary focus is clinical and consult nephrology, and other specialties include vascular surgery, hypertension, and dialysis. The skilled physicians provide comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care with a mission “to provide state-of-the-art medical care by incorporating the science and art of medicine with compassion, integrity, and dignity for all of our patients.”

In her professional experience, Dr. Zafar is affiliated with Lake Huron Medical Center, Ascension St. John Hospital, Ascension Michigan River District Hospital, Mount Clemens Regional Medical Center, Henry Ford Macomb, Port Huron General, and Mercy Hospital Port Huron.

In good standing with a number of professional organizations, she is a member of the American College of Physicians, the American Medical Association, the Renal Physicians Association, and the American Society of Nephrology.

At the start of her academic career, Dr. Zafar graduated with her medical degree from Dubai Medical College for Girls in 1996. She then went on to perform her residency in internal medicine and her fellowship in nephrology at Ascension St. John Hospital in Detroit.

As a testament to her success, she is board-certified in internal medicine and nephrology by the American Board of Internal Medicine, a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world. She is also certified by the American Society of Hypertension as a Clinical Hypertension Specialist.

Throughout her line of work, Dr. Zafar has conducted various publications, including: “Role of Aldosterone in Left Ventricular Hypertrophy among African-American Patients with End-Stage Renal Disease on Hemodialysis” & “Aldosterone Is Involved in Left Ventricular Hypertrophy in African American Males with End Stage Renal Disease Treated with Hemodialysis.”

Nephrology is a specialty of medicine and pediatrics that concerns itself with the kidneys. It is the study of normal kidney function and kidney disease, the preservation of kidney health, and the treatment of kidney disease, from diet and medication to renal replacement therapy. Nephrologists have advanced training in treating kidney disease. They diagnose and treat kidney failure, as well as help patients by prescribing medications, offering special diet advice, and coordinating dialysis care or kidney transplantation when it becomes necessary.

On a more personal note, Dr. Zafar speaks multiple languages, including English, Arabic, Hindi, and Urdu.
