Get to know Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. Steven S. Louis, who serves patients in Hinsdale, Illinois.

Exceptionally skilled in the field of orthopaedic surgery, Dr. Louis has been an integral part of the Hinsdale Orthopaedics team since 1997. His exceptional surgical skills are complemented by a personable style and dedication to the highest quality patient outcomes and satisfaction.

Fellowship-trained in the area of trauma, he treats patients with traumatic injury, particularly those with pelvic injuries, complex fractures, nonunions, and infections. In the more recent years his practice focuses on anterior hip and knee replacements.

Hinsdale Orthopaedics is a new division of the Illinois Bone & Joint Institute. Providing state-of-the-art treatments by the highest quality physicians in a most caring and attentive manner is the hallmark of this practice. Today, Hinsdale Orthopaedic Associates boasts 31 exceptionally trained physicians representing all orthopaedic subspecialties. Through their joint efforts with Illinois Bone & Joint Institute, their patients also have access to the expanded resources of IBJI’s multiple locations across the north and northwest suburbs and Chicago as well as to more than 100 IBJI physicians representing a full range of orthopaedic care.

As one of the pioneers of the Direct Anterior Approach total hip replacement in the Chicago land area, Dr Louis performs total hip replacement using the Direct Anterior Approach. This procedure was a natural and comfortable transition given Dr. Louis’ experience in pelvic trauma reconstruction. For knee replacements, he uses a customized system made specifically for each patient’s anatomy.

Well-known for the excellent work he does, Dr. Louis was the Director of Orthopaedic Trauma at Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove for 18 years, and serves as the Chairman of the Operating Room Committee and Chairman of the Department of Surgery for 10 years. He is also an instructor for the Association for the Study of Internal Fixation (ASIF), and for the Direct Anterior Approach Total Hip Arthroplasty, training surgeons, residents and other healthcare professionals. His other hospital affiliations include Hinsdale Hospital, LaGrange Hospital and Salt Creek Surgery Center.

His other professional affiliations include the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Association of Bone and Joint Surgeons, the American Medical Association, the Orthopaedic Trauma Association, the DuPage County Medical Society, and the Illinois Orthopaedic Society.

Academically, Dr. Louis started his illustrious medical career by earning his medical degree from the Feinberg School of Medicine – Northwestern University. He then went on to complete his internship and residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin, and his fellowship in orthopaedic trauma at The Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.

An expert in his field, he is board-certified in orthopaedic surgery by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS), which is an organization with the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for orthopaedic residents and surgeons as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopaedic surgeons.

“I take time with patients and their families to thoroughly explain their condition and options available to them. Because I treat orthopaedic trauma patients who are often faced with difficult situations and are forced to make tough decisions, I try to put them at ease with humor and by giving hope” stated Dr. Louis.

Orthopaedic surgery is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopaedic surgeons use both surgical and non-surgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders.
