The Renal Department at Boston Medical Center is a nationally recognized research and training program in nephrology for more than five decades. Basic science research in the division focuses on the immunopathogenesis of glomerular diseases, structural biology of the glomerulus, mechanisms of autoimmunity, renal cystic disease and cancer, kidney development, and mechanisms of cell injury in acute renal failure.

Alongside his clinical role, Dr. Bonegio serves as an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Boston University School of Medicine. 

His acclaimed career in medicine began after he earned his medical degree from the University of the Witwatersrand Medical School in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1990. He then went on to perform two residencies at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, and a fellowship in nephrology at Boston Medical Center in 2003.

An expert in his field, Dr. Bonegio is board-certified in both internal medicine and nephrology by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.
