  • A New Toothbrush Will Be On The Market - Gum Disease

A new toothbrush will be on the market later this year. The sad news is that it doesn't address the area between your teeth. This new toothbrush designed by a major toothpaste company has special sensors to let the user know that the biofilm (plaque) has been removed from the area being brushed, so...

  • It Takes Time to Learn How to Floss and Brush Your Teeth

Our office offers the LANAP protocol. LANAP, is a laser assisted new attachment procedure, it can be used for younger patients with inflamed gums or small pockets. No anesthesia is required and the patient has all of their bacteria removed. As long as at home dental care is maintained, the patient...

  • Gum Disease●It Is Not Just Your Teeth●Your Entire Body May Be Affected

Gum disease affects our gums and teeth. I am not sure that patients really understand why flossing and brushing has to be done every day. Every day plaque, a sticky whitish mass of living bacteria forms at our gum line and on our teeth. Whether we eat or not, plaque forms. We may see plaque on our...

  • Floss and Brush Your Teeth as If Your Life Depended on it. Because It Does

The quality of the lives we'll have when we get older depends on the home care we are doing or not doing right now.Our mouths perform complex services for us. Our mouths and teeth play a role in our social activities. Everyone wants straight white teeth. We pay large sums of money to straighten our...

  • Are dental CT scans for infants dangerous?

The CT scans and dental X-rays have made great advances. Digitalizing X-rays have lowered the amount of radiation exposure. You may receive less radiation with a CT scan than you receive flying across country in a jetliner. Your infant has some developmental problems. Doctors need as much information to guide how to repair these problems. You can be sure your infant will be given the least amount of radiation to get what is needed. With this single X-ray, your infant is being spared multiple X-rays, but has given the treating doctors far more information they need to help your infant. READ MORE

  • How long does it take for a dry socket to heal?

Dry sockets from a dental extraction sometimes happen. After a tooth is removed, a blood clot forms in the extraction site. One theory is if the "cloth" is lost, a dry socket can occur. Dry sockets can be painful. Doctors have different ways of treating them. You were given instructions on what to do and what you shouldn't do after an extraction. Smoking is one major factor. Sipping out of a straw or can of liquid is another. Rinsing your mouth frequently with warm salt water is helpful. Your doctor may have wanted to place a medicated dressing. If you are still having problems, you may want to go back to your doctor. We are all human. We like to think we know which way is best for us. If what you are doing is not working, by all means, try a different approach. THAT'S how we learn. All doctors have different treatment methods. You selected this doctor; if your way isn't working, please go back. READ MORE

  • What should I do if my permanent crown is not feeling right?

By all means, get back to your doctor. Most likely, the material used to cement your crown loosened. Crown cementing materials are great. But they are TECHNIQUE sensitive. Your doctor will most likely get you into the office very quickly. READ MORE

  • Are there side effects of a tooth extraction?

The important question is, why does this tooth need to be extracted? If it is for crowding and you can't clean your teeth in that area. Once the tooth is removed, you have to assess your situation. Are you flossing your teeth first and brushing correctly. Are you planning to replace the tooth? When a tooth is removed the teeth on the same side and the teeth above or below the extraction site will start slowly moving. This can cause malocclusion. Teeth want to touch. The tooth above or below can move up or down to try to "touch." You may notice that a tooth below or above the extraction site has become higher or lower than the rest of the teeth in the arch. This may cause food being trapped between some teeth -- that was not a problem before. There are other problems that removing one tooth can cause. Make sure the next time you have your teeth cleaned, and the talk about "HomeCare" starts PAY ATTENTION. YOUR TEETH ARE YOURS 24/7. Going to the dentist twice a year will not guarantee you will keep your teeth. Poor home care is affecting your total body health. Gum disease just doesn't affect your mouth. Bacteria and their toxins get into your blood stream. They can travel to your brain, heart, liver, lungs, and joints. Mouth care was never focused as a major part of Health Care Insurance, yet poor home care is causing or adding billions to the cost of health care. Our mouths were considered "COSMETIC, WHITE TEETH, GREAT SMILES." This is the individual's RESPONSIBILITY, while the effect of poor mouth care has been quietly damaging our total body health and adding exponentially to health care costs. Remember, we are all born with the possibility of having up to 32 teeth. Take the population of our country and multiply it by 32. That's a big part of health care costs, we never even considered was the "SILENT" partner we never knew existed! READ MORE

  • How do you stop wisdom tooth pain at home?

Wisdom teeth can be really painful. One person in 25 has room for all 4 wisdom teeth. You may have been told when you were younger that you needed to have your wisdom teeth extracted. That's not going to help you now. You may have pressure that is causing pain. Your gum tissues may have food particles beneath the tissue adding to your pain and if a cavity has developed between your wisdom tooth and the one in front of it. Rinsing your mouth with warm salt water may flush out debris. Do this often -- more than 5 times a day. Use 1/2 tsp. to an eight ounce glass of water. You may want to talk to your doctor about something for pain. There are over-the-counter pain meds. Pain medication may not or will not take all the pain away, but at least will make the pain more tolerable. If you start to swell, call your doctor. Make sure you are sleeping with your head elevated. When you are in pain, keep track of when you took your last pain med. If you happened to fall asleep and wake up you don't know how long you slept. Writing it down helps you keep track. READ MORE

  • Is scaling of teeth painful?

Scaling of your teeth is done to remove hardened deposits at or below the gum line. These hardened deposits can cause pain and infect gum tissue and can lead to bone loss. There are different ways to scale teeth. It would be in your friend's best interest to find out what is available, depending on the dentist. Your friend's mouth will be anesthetized. You can have one side of your mouth done one week, and the other side, the next week. Your friend will need to learn a different way of keeping his teeth clean. Your friend can have his entire mouth done in one sitting. Yes, he or she will be numb. But with a special laser, all gum disease will be gone. There will be no cutting or sewing. This procedure is called LANAP. Home care instructions will be given. Dentistry has come a long way. Investigate what is available. READ MORE

  • When can I start brushing my teeth after wisdom tooth removal?

For the first 24 hours following any extraction, patients may be advised not to rinse their mouth. Your oral surgeon will have a set of instructions for you to follow. After 24 hours, if you are instructed to start rinsing your mouth, rinsing as much as possible is soothing to the surgical site. Depending on how wide you can open your mouth to get a toothbrush in your mouth, you may want to start with a small soft tooth brush. You will not want to touch the surgical site, but using gauze 2 x 2's or 4 x4's to clean your teeth and a tongue cleaner will help to freshen your mouth. READ MORE

  • How critical is a wisdom tooth abscess infection?

Only 1 person out of 25 has room for all four wisdom teeth. If you have a wisdom tooth that is bothering you, please do what your dentist suggested. Have it removed. Wisdom teeth can can cause serious problems. If you have had braces and your teeth look great, the pressure of two teeth in the back, on top, and bottom can crowd your teeth again. The pressure of wisdom teeth can be painful. The wisdom tooth can overlap with the tooth in front of it and it can cause decay. You can lose the tooth in front of it. Infected wisdom teeth can be so infected that you can become critically ill. If you are planning to travel, go to school, etc., you don't need infected teeth problems. READ MORE

  • How do you take care of a dental bridge?

Taking care of a dental bridge is important. You have made an investment in your mouth care. Make sure you brush your teeth morning and night. You should be using a soft tooth brush. Flossing your teeth should be done first. I like finger flossing. You wrap the floss around your fingers. You slide the floss along each side of your tooth. You don't jam the floss on the pointed gum tissue. You go down as far as you can on each side of the tooth. You need to invest in floss threaders. Some threaders are like fishing line that has a loop. They look like needle threaders only in plastic fish line. You place the floss inside the loop and pull the floss under your bridge to the inside of your mouth. You must clean under your bridge. You put the floss down against each side of the tooth. You will be surprised how much food gets under a bridge. If you don't clean under the bridge, your gum tissue can get infected. It can hurt. It will have an odor. The teeth, even though you have crowns, can decay at the gum line. Brush your teeth at a 45 degree angle. Brush on the cheek side and the tongue side. You have bone there. Get a tongue cleaner for your tongue. Rinse you mouth with your mouth wash or a 1/2 teaspoon of salt in an 8 oz. glass of water. I like mouth irrigators. They flush out tiny food particles. Remember, you want your teeth and bridge to last. Take care of those teeth you want to keep! READ MORE

  • Can you sleep with dentures?

As a rule, you are suppose to take your dentures out. You are giving your gum tissue a time to rest. You should be soaking your dentures nightly. After cleaning your dentures, place them in water or a solution you like. You should be using fresh water or a tablet solution. Food particles can lay on the bottom of the container. Using a clean solution, even if it it water, helps keep the dentures and your mouth feeling better. Rinsing your mouth with salt water and using a small gauze square to wipe your gums is helpful. And don't forget to use a tongue cleaner for your tongue! READ MORE

  • Is it okay to take ibuprofen before oral surgery?

Taking ibuprofen before having oral surgery can be helpful. We use it before laser surgery. Ibuprofen helps with the inflammation and pain. After your oral surgery, having your pain medication filled at the pharmacy and taking it before the numbness wears off, can keep you more comfortable. Do what your oral surgeon tells you. Pain medication is used to make you comfortable, though it may not take all the pain away. READ MORE

Areas of research

Dr. Tarnoski's personal research is FACIAL PAIN.. Besides offering general dentistry,

the office works with FACIAL PAIN patients who have been in PAIN for more than

18 months. Those patients who have been treated for TMJ  but have not had any significant relief,  there are other contributing possibilities.  For these PAIN patients, our advice is that  nothing be done that can't be reversed.  Extracting teeth, full mouth extraction, root canal on demand.  If you can't stand the teeth in your mouth, how do expect to wear a denture?

Our second area of special interest is in treating gum disease.  Using the Millennium  Periolase MVP-7 Laser(TM), all gum disease bacteria is removed in ONE TREATMENT-NO CUTTING/NO SEWING.  LESS PAIN. This laser was built to treat gum disease. Your body's own stem cells help to restore the supporting bone and tissues.  This laser and the treatment, LANAP, for natural teeth, and LAPIP for infected implants, is FDA approved.

We also help you design your own home care.  Gum disease and mouth infection will be the NEW FRONTIER to maintain your body's health.

Get to know Dentist Barbara A. Tarnoski, who serves patients in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dr. Tarnoski is a Dentist currently serving patients with Philadelphia Dental Laser & Cosmetic Dentistry, LLC. Located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Philadelphia Dental Laser & Cosmetic Dentistry, LLC remains dedicated to helping patients depending on their specific needs. The practice utilizes the LANAP procedure, which is a safe and proven laser treatment that gently removes bacteria and diseased tissue without cutting and stitching of the gums, which comes along with traditional gum surgery. The procedure only removes the diseased tissue, thereby allowing the body to heal naturally so the gum pockets improve and the teeth can become more stable. The laser also aids in the sealing of the pocket, where the bacteria resided, so no new germs can enter. Dr. Tarnoski earned her bachelor’s degree in history and elementary education, as well as her master’s degree in education from Wilkes College in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. She then spent the next few years teaching within the Wilkes-Barre School District, where she received the PTA’s Lifetime Membership Award for Service. The award is the highest honor from the nation’s largest child advocacy organization and it is given to the person who daily lives out his or her commitment to children. Experiencing challenges as a child with some dental care she received, Dr. Tarnoski decided to capitalize on her background in education and pursue a degree in dental medicine from Temple University. She is a recipient of the Clairol Take Charge Award for women who have overcome obstacles and changed the course of their lives and who can serve as role models for other women. Dentistry, also known as Dental and Oral Medicine, is a branch of medicine that consists of the study, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases, disorders, and conditions of the oral cavity. Dr. Tarnoski has been practicing dentistry since 1987 and has continued her field of study by taking continuing education courses in periodontal disease, implant surgery, cosmetic dentistry and laser dentistry. She always takes a proactive approach to dental care, teaching and showing her patients how to properly brush, floss and take good care of their teeth, gums and overall health.
