Get to know Cardiothoracic Surgeon Dr. Zewditu E. Asfaw, who serves patients throughout the State of Michigan.

An experienced cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr. Asfaw treats conditions affecting the circulatory system including veins, arteries & blood vessels. In collaboration with Ascension, she is affiliated with Ascension Providence Hospital – Southfield Campus, Ascension Macomb-Oakland Hospital, and Ascension St. John Hospital.

Licensed to practice medicine in Michigan, Dr. Asfaw treats her patients and their families the way that she hopes her family would be treated by another physician. For her, there is nothing more rewarding than giving a patient a fresh start after repairing their ailing heart. She loves working with heart failure patients because the field has progressed so much in the past decade and patients now have a greater opportunity to live active lives with the current devices available on the market. She knows that surgery, particularly heart surgery, can be an intimidating experience, so she strives to make her patients understand each and every step so that they are comfortable with the process and the decisions that they are making.

The oldest of three children, Dr. Asfaw grew up in Detroit. Her father is a cardiac surgeon and eventually, she realized that she couldn’t picture herself doing anything but fixing broken hearts, like her dad. After graduating with her medical degree from Wake Forest School of Medicine, she performed her internship at Rush University Medical Center and her residency at Detroit Medical Center. This was followed by fellowships at John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County and the University of Chicago Medical Center

Subsequent to her education, she attained board certification in surgery and surgical critical care through the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.

Cardiothoracic surgery is the field of medicine involved in the surgical treatment of organs inside the thorax. Cardiothoracic surgeons are medical doctors who specialize in surgical procedures inside the thorax, which may involve the heart, lungs, esophagus, and other organs in the chest. Alongside performing surgery, they also diagnose and treat diseases of these organs.

When Dr. Asfaw is not at the hospital, she enjoys reading, watching crime dramas, and spending time with friends and family.
