  • Stumped toe?

It looks like you have an infection at the top of the toe. When you hit the toe, you most likely pushed the nail into the skin and now it’s infected. You will need to see you foot doctor as soon as you can. In the meantime, soak the foot in epsom salt and warm water. If the redness and swelling keeps increasing, head to your nearest urgent care or emergency room. READ MORE

  • Painful big toe?

You may have fractured your toe. Please visit a local podiatrist so they can take x rays and evaluate you for your condition. READ MORE

  • Why does my ankle pop when I walk?

There could be many reasons why your ankle pops. If you had previous ankle sprains, it may be due to a previously injured ligament that holds the ankle together. It might be due to loose ligaments associated with ligamentous laxity. It may be due to a injured ligament that used to hold the peroneal tendons in place but is no longer doing so. It may also be due to a loose piece of bone or cartlige that is floating in your ankle and causing the ankle to “pop”. Best thing to do would be to visit a professional to evaluate you. In the meantime wear a ankle brace while walking to secure the ankle. READ MORE

  • Will I need surgery for a sprained ankle?

Experiencing pain a week after an ankle sprain is normal and not necessarily an indicator whether surgery will be necessary. You should rest, ice, immobilize the ankle with a ankle brace, and take some anti inflammatories to help with the pain. If pain persists seek professional treatment. READ MORE

  • Would I need surgery for my heel spur?

The type of surgery depends on where the heel spur is located, on the bottom or back of the heel. There are various procedures available for both. Typically the surgery involves resection of a spur through a small incision, followed by 2-4 weeks of being in a cast and crutches, without walking on the surgical foot. Then followed by physical therapy. READ MORE

  • I feel like the bottoms of my feet are swollen. What could be wrong?

There are many factors that can cause the feeling of your foot being swollen. Most of the time it has to do with a problem with the nerves. An impingement of a nerve, either in your back or your ankle or foot, can produce a feeling of swelling. Other causes include problems with your veins or arteries. A visit to a local podiatrist for an evaluation is definitely a good idea. READ MORE

  • I have a strange pain in the bottom of my feet. What could be the reason for this?

Pain on the bottom of the foot can be cause by many different foot pathologies, ranging from plantar fasciitis, if present on the heel or arch, to possible stress fractures, if present around the sole of the foot, to sesamoiditis if the pain is under the big toe. Best bet is to see a local podiatrist for evaluation. READ MORE

  • Could foot odor be a sign of an infection?

Yes, foot odor can definitely be a sign of infection. Both bacterial and fungal infections produce odor. Please visit a local podiatrist for an evaluation. READ MORE

  • Why do I keep getting blisters even after switching shoes?

There are many reasons why you keep on getting blisters on the back of the feet. The blisters can be secondary to friction due to an underlying prominent bone or due to an underlying skin condition, such as athlete's foot. Please see a podiatrist for further evaluation. READ MORE

  • Are there any side effects of wearing acupuncture slippers for a long time?

I typically don’t advise patients to wear acupuncture slippers, as the slippers may irritate prominent bones on the bottom of the foot and even cause muscle aches on the bottom of the foot. READ MORE

  • What is the best way of recovering from a sprain?

It is best to seek professional treatment to rule out any underlying fractures. Otherwise, rest, ice, and elevation along with compression/immobilization with an ACE bandage or ankle brace of the affected ankle is the best way to treat the ankle sprain. Anti-inflammatories such as Advil or Aleve can also help with the pain. READ MORE

  • Why is one of my toes smaller than the others?

If the adjacent toe is shorter, it is possible you have brachymetatarsia. The condition is defined by shortening of the metatarsal, in your case the 4th metatarsal, that is making the 4th toe look smaller/shorter. READ MORE
