An excellent vascular surgeon, Dr. Hershberger is affiliated with Sarasota Vascular Specialists. He specializes in complex open abdominal aortic reconstruction and minimally invasive techniques; revascularization of the lower extremities utilizing bypass surgery as well as endovascular techniques such as balloon angioplasty, atherectomy, and stents; treatment of deep venous thrombosis; carotid arteriography, endarterectomy and stents; dialysis access; renal and mesenteric interventions, including bypass, angioplasty and stents; and chronic venous insufficiency, including all varicose vein outpatient therapies.

The Sarasota Vascular Specialists practice is the largest medical practice in the Tri-county area dedicated solely to the treatment of patients with disorders of the veins and arteries, the vascular system. The providers are uniquely trained and experienced to offer all forms of diagnosis and therapy.

Prior to his current endeavours, Dr. Hershberger held a faculty position at Loyola University Medical Center, where he was an Assistant Professor of Vascular Surgery, participating in clinical research and training the next generation of vascular surgeons. 

Regarding his educational background, he earned his medical degree and completed a residency in general surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. He then completed a two-year fellowship in vascular surgery and endovascular therapy in the Chicago area at Loyola University Medical Center.

A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), the doctor is board-certified in both general surgery and vascular surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.

A Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) and a Registered Physician in Vascular Interpretation (RPVI), Dr. Hershberger has published book chapters discussing management of traumatic arterial injury and neurologic complications of aortic surgery. In addition, he has published numerous articles related to the surgical management of the vascular patient.

Vascular surgery is a surgical subspecialty in which diseases of the vascular system, including the arteries, veins, and lymphatic circulation, are managed by medical therapy, minimally-invasive catheter procedures, and surgical reconstruction. A vascular surgeon diagnoses, treats, and manages conditions in the arteries and veins, also called the blood vessels. These specialists treat a range of health problems, from spider and varicose veins to life-threatening aneurysms, and can help patients manage chronic conditions throughout their lives.

With almost 20 years of experience in vascular surgery, Dr. Hershberger has received plenty of honors, including the Patients’ Choice Award (2017, 2018), Compassionate Doctor Recognition (2017, 2018), and On-Time Doctor Award (2017, 2018).

On a more personal note, he lives in Sarasota with his wife, Jennifer Blumetti, MD (colorectal surgeon), and two children. He has been on numerous charitable medical missions, including clearing an airstrip for a remote hospital in Papua New Guinea, building bathrooms for an orphanage in Nepal, and volunteering with the Salvation Army Hospital in rural Zimbabwe. His hobbies include classic cars and spending quality time with his family.
