Get to know Gastroenterologist Dr. Carlos A. Vargas, who serves patients in Miami, Florida.

Dr. Vargas is a highly-trained gastroenterologist who sees patients at his private practice, GastroMed, based in Miami, Florida. 

Specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of various gastrointestinal and digestive system conditions, GastroMed comprises board-certified physicians with extensive expertise in comprehensive gastroenterology care. The practice emphasizes thorough analysis and evaluation to discern the root causes of underlying symptoms. Following this, they provide patient-centered care customized to the unique needs of each individual. 

In addition, GastroMed offers screenings for colon cancer and other conditions affecting the colon, small intestine, and upper gastrointestinal tract. In regards to his educational background, Dr. Vargas graduated with his Medical Degree from the University of Antioquia College of Medicine in Colombia in 1980. He then spent five years in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where he did his residency in internal medicine at San Juan’s Veterans Hospital, after which he completed his fellowship in gastroenterology at the University Puerto Rico’s University Hospital. 

Furthering his training in the United States, Dr. Vargas completed his fellowship in hepatology at the University of Miami’s Jackson Memorial Hospital, under the guidance of world-renowned Dr. Eugene Schiff, in 1993. 

Board certified in both internal medicine and gastroenterology, Dr. Vargas is recognized as a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Gastroenterology is the branch of medicine focused on the digestive system and its disorders. A gastroenterologist is a physician who has extensive training in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders related to the esophagus, stomach, small intestines, colon, liver, pancreas, and biliary system.

Outside of practicing medicine, Dr. Vargas enjoys traveling, with Puerto Rico being his preferred travel destination, and gourmet dining. His favorite professional publications include Clinics in Liver Disease and the Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology.
