Bernard John Hynes, MD, FHRS, CCDS

Dr. Hynes has been in practice for 17 years. He worked in New Jersey for Deborah Specialty Physicians at Atlanticare Medical Center before joining LewisGale HCA in November 2021.  Prior to that he was in Ohio and developed the electrophysiology program at Bon Secours Mercy Hospital St. Rita's and the electrophysiology program at Union Hospital in Elkton, Maryland.  He served on the staff for ten years at Christiana Hospital in Delaware.  Dr. Hynes also established the WATCHMAN program for Bon Secours Mercy Hospital St. Rita's.  He received his Medical Degree from the University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio. He completed his Internal Medicine Residency at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospitals, and did his specialty training in cardiology and electrophysiology at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center at Penn State College of Medicine.

He is Board Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Cardiovascular Disease and Cardiac Electrophysiology. He is also board certified by the International Board of Heart Rhythm Examiners as a Clinical Cardiac Device Specialist. In addition to his clinical skills, he has also held numerous administrative roles as EP lab director and has widely published in Current Treatments in Cardiovascular Medicine, Current Opinion in Cardiology, Journal of Interventional Cardiac Electrophysiology, and the American Journal of Cardiology.

Dr. Hynes has experience with the treatment of all heart rhythm disorders and is skilled in the insertion and management of all cardiac implantable electronic devices.  In addition to medical and device treatments for abnormal heart rhythm disorders, he performs electrophysiology studies and ablation procedures for atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, and supraventricular and ventricular arrhythmias.  He is bringing his experience from Ohio and New Jersey to start the WATCHMAN program at LewisGale.

He is married and has two children. His wife’s family lives nearby in Pennsylvania. Dr. Hynes enjoys riding his bicycle in his spare time and he and his family are excited to live in the Roanoke-Salem community.
