Get to know Obstetrician-Gynecologist Dr. Camille Kanaan, who serves patients in Norfolk, Virginia.

A seasoned physician with over 37 years of experience in the field of obstetrics & gynecology, Dr. Kanaan is the Medical Director of Labor & Delivery at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and is the Director of the Placenta Accreta Spectrum Clinic.

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, located in Norfolk, Virginia, is a 525-bed tertiary care facility that is home to the only Level I Adult Trauma Center and burn trauma unit in Hampton Roads, and also serves as the primary teaching hospital for Eastern Virginia Medical School. As a recognized accredited Comprehensive Stroke Center, and Magnet hospital for nursing excellence, the hospital specializes in heart and vascular, neurosciences, neurosurgery, urology, oncology, spine care, advanced imaging, behavioral health, maternity, and women’s health, including a state-of-the-art neonatal intensive care unit.

Academically, Dr. Kanaan obtained his medical degree at the American University of Beirut in 1978 and completed his residency at both the American University of Beirut and McGill University in 1985. Later, he completed his fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at Case Western Reserve University in 1988.

In pursuit of clinical excellence, the doctor is board-certified in obstetrics & gynecology and maternal-fetal medicine by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG). He is also an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Medical Association, and the Infectious Disease Society of America.

With a passion for teaching, he joined the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Eastern Virginia Medical School in September 2014, with a focus on maternal-fetal medicine. He has since made significant contributions to the field through his research, published articles on Doppler ultrasound and has given numerous presentations at the national level.

Obstetrics and gynecology (OB-GYN) is the medical specialty that encompasses the two subspecialties of obstetrics (covering pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period) and gynecology (covering the health of the female reproductive system – vagina, cervix, uterus, ovaries, and breasts).
