Get to know Pediatric Neurologist Dr. Mary “Mitzi” Payne, who serves patients throughout the State of West Virginia, Ohio, and Kentucky.
Dr. Payne is a pediatric neurologist with a special clinical interest in seizure disorders, cerebral palsy, concussion and brain development. Her goal is to intervene early, carefully and effectively, so that the child’s brain development and learning aren’t affected. She strives to help children in their educational, social and emotional development and all the other things that can be affected by a neurological disorder.
Currently, she is a Professor of Pediatric Neurology in the Department of Neurology at Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine – Marshall University. She is an attending physician at Cabell Huntington Hospital, leads the Pediatric Concussion Clinic at Marshall Health Sports Medicine Institute, and holds developmental clinics for infants exposed to substances in utero. She sees patients at the Marshall Neurology department in Huntington and Teays Valley, at Marshall Sports Medicine Institute and at Lily’s Place.
Back in the early days of her academic career, Dr. Payne graduated with her medical degree from Louisiana State University. She then went on to perform both her residency and fellowship in pediatric neurology at the Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans.
Passionate about her profession, she is board-certified in child neurology and epilepsy by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). In addition to being a Fellow of the American Academy of Nephrology (FAAN), Dr. Payne is a member of the American Academy of Neurology Government Relations Committee.
