Get to know Trauma and Critical Care Surgeon Dr. Ziad C. Sifri, who serves patients in Newark, New Jersey.

Dr. Sifri is an Associate Professor of Surgery at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School (NJMS) & a trauma and critical care attending at University Hospital, both in Newark, New Jersey. He is also the Director of NJMS’ Office of Global Health, Center for Global Surgery, and global surgery fellowship program.

As such, he lectures about global surgery and access to surgical care for first-year medical students in the Health Equity and Social Justice course as well as to third-year surgery clerkship students. He runs the international surgery clinical elective for fourth-year medical students. He is also a faculty mentor for NJMS’ International Surgical Health Initiative (ISHI) student club and the Distinction Program in Global Health.

The President of International Surgical Health Initiative (ISHI), Dr. Sifri organizes and leads several surgical trips per year with ISHI, which is a humanitarian nonprofit organization (501c3) that provides free surgical care to underserved communities internationally through volunteer services. Medical residents and students who want to gain international experience travel and volunteer with him. He has volunteered in Haiti, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Peru, Guatemala, Bangladesh, and the Philippines.

His global surgery research interests include capacity building (RECOVER Program), long-term outcomes of surgical missions, surgical outreach, international teaching (Stop the Bleed), remote teaching, gender equity, and task-sharing/shifting in surgery.

In regards to his educational background, Dr. Sifri graduated with his medical degree from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at McGill University in Canada in 1995. He then went on to perform his internship and residency in general surgery at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, and his trauma and critical care research fellowship at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School.

A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, he is board-certified in surgery & surgical critical care by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.

Trauma surgery is a surgical specialty that utilizes both operative and non-operative management to treat traumatic injuries, typically in an acute setting. Trauma surgeons generally complete residency training in general surgery and often fellowship training in trauma or surgical critical care.

Surgical critical care is a specialty of surgery and a primary component of general surgery related to the care of patients with acute, life-threatening or potentially life-threatening surgical conditions. A critical care surgeon is a surgeon with expertise in the management of the critically ill and postoperative patient, particularly the trauma victim, who specializes in critical care medicine diagnoses, treats, and supports patients with multiple organ dysfunction.

In honor of his clinical expertise, Dr. Sifri has been the recipient of the Patients’ Choice Award (2014, 2013, 2012, 2009, 2008) and the On-Time Doctor Award (2014).
