Get to know Family Physician Dr. Michelle T. Chu, who serves patients in Falls Church, Virginia.

An excellent family physician, Dr. Chu founded The Grace Family Practice in 2002, and since then has treated countless patients from various backgrounds. Her areas of expertise include adolescent/young adult medicine, preventive/diabetic care, sports medicine/musculoskeletal pain, and women’s health.

She believes that strong communication is essential to good medicine, and always ensures that her patients are well-informed during each step of their diagnosis and treatment. With her signature optimism, humor, and cordiality, she continually strives to treat each patient who comes to her asking for help in a caring, professional, dedicated, and comprehensive manner.

“I believe that it is a privilege for a patient to allow a physician to take care of him/her. I welcome open communication, a patient’s understanding of their condition, and then participation in decisions for their care. To me, a partnership between doctor and patients is essential for good care. To be comprehensive, a doctor needs to consider a patient’s emotional, psychosocial as well as physical health. For the young people, besides being their doctor, I would like to help them realize their potential, close the generation gap, and be proud of who they are culturally. I also strongly believe in preventive care. It is better to prevent illness from happening and to treat them” expressed Dr. Chu.

Among her other roles, she can be found on staff at Inova Fairfax Hospital, Inova Fair Oaks Hospital, and Virginia Hospital Center.

Academically, Dr. Chu holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from the University of Virginia. She started her career in medicine by earning her medical degree from the University of Virginia Medical School in 1993, and completed her residency in family medicine at Providence Hospital – Georgetown University in 1996.

Following her residency, she finally began doing what she loves: practicing family medicine and helping patients in need. She cared for patients at a practice in Fairfax, Virginia until she relocated in 2002.

As a testament of her continued education, she is board-certified in family medicine by the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM). The ABFM is a non-profit, independent medical association of American physicians who practice in family medicine and its sub-specialties.

Since 1996, Dr. Chu has been an active member of the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Family medicine is a medical specialty devoted to comprehensive health care for people of all ages. The specialist is called a family physician or family doctor. A family physician is often the first person a patient sees when seeking healthcare services. They examine and treat patients with a wide range of conditions and refer those with serious ailments to a specialist or appropriate facility.

Community outreach service and education are very important to Dr. Chu. She has mentored high school and college students (PA, NP, MA students) from North Virginia Community College. She also enjoys working with young people, guiding them to correct career choices and giving them an inspiring, fun, and adventurous view of medicine. She has also watched over picnics, sports competitions, and fairs at church for help with stabilizing minor injuries, such as people passing out at church.

Among her most notable achievements, Dr. Chu was awarded the Consumer’s Research Council of America’s Top Family Doctors Award in 2007 and 2014.

On a more personal note, she lives in Falls Church with her husband and three children. She enjoys spending time with her family and friends, traveling, cultivating both her cultural and spiritual growth with her parish community, going apple picking, going on picnics, and watching her kids play soccer and tennis. She also likes to bake and to try cooking new dishes.

She is fluent in English, Vietnamese, and Spanish.
