Beginning his medical career as a Flight Surgeon in the United States Air Force, Colonel Schaefer served as the Commander of Aeromedical Evacuation on a number of missions to treat wounded soldiers. One such mission was Desert Storm in 1990 where he headed up a medical unit as Commander in Germany treating 5000 patients coming from Saudi Arabia . He retired from the Air Force in 1992 after serving 49 distinguished years. It marks the longest service record of any United States AirForce or any military person from all the services..
