Get to know Vascular Surgeon Dr. David Sailors, who serves the Athens area at his private practice and at several local hospitals.

Dr. Sailors received his medical degree at The Medical College of Georgia in Augusta and his General Surgical training at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine – Chattanooga Unit. He then completed a two-year Fellowship in Vascular Surgery at the University of Arkansas under Dr. Robert Barnes and has been board certified in vascular surgery by the American Board of Surgery.

Currently, Dr. Sailors practices at University Surgical Vascular and Piedmont Healthcare. Additionally, he is affiliated with several area hospitals, including Athens Regional Medical Center and St. Mary’s Health Care System-Athens. He has participated in research efforts to further the field and has published his findings in prestigious medical journals, including the Journal of Emergency Medicine and the American Journal of Surgery.

To stay up-to-date on developments in his field, Dr. Sailors maintains professional memberships in the Society for Vascular Surgery and the American College of Surgeons. Additionally, Dr. Sailors currently serves as the President of the Georgia Vascular Society, which allows him to give back to the field. Throughout his career, he has won many awards and accolades, including the Regional Top Doctor prize.

Vascular conditions affect the veins and arteries in your body, which conduct oxygen to every living cell. Think of your veins and arteries as expressways or rivers. When there are traffic jams or road construction,  or when dams break, trouble ensues. But in most cases, vascular conditions are highly treatable, often without surgery. It is important to see a vascular surgeon, even when surgery is not needed. Vascular surgeons specialize in treatments of every kind of vascular problem except those of the heart (treated by cardiovascular surgeons) and the brain (treated by neurosurgeons). A common condition such as atherosclerosis may show up in the legs, for example, but affects the whole body. Vascular surgeons will talk to you about how exercise, diet and medication can be the first step in regaining your health. When surgery is needed, vascular surgeons are trained in all types of interventions, not just one or two.

Though interested in all aspects of vascular surgery, Dr. Sailors brings special expertise in the field of endovascular surgery at his current practice. Additionally, he serves as an Assistant Professor Of Surgery at the UGA /MCG Medical Partnership, which allows him to train and educate the next generation of surgeons.
