An expert, detail-oriented anesthesiologist, Dr. Sell has been in private practice in Tallahassee, Florida since leaving the Army. 

Dedicated to the highest quality and safest care possible, he has provided anesthesia for more than 70,000 patients during his career to date. This includes more than 3,000 patients undergoing open heart surgical procedures and more than 6,000 pediatric patients. He has extensive experience in regional nerve blocks, having performed more than 2,000 ultrasound-guided blocks, and has performed more than 15,000 epidurals (for obstetric and other procedures). 

Proficient in all surgical anesthetic specialties, Dr. Sell serves as a staff anesthesiologist at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital (where he is Chairman of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee), and at Capital Regional Medical Center.

Holding an academic rank, he has been a Clinical Assistant Professor at the Florida State University College of Medicine since 2004.

A native of Albany, Georgia, Dr. Sell graduated with his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Emory University in 1977, and his medical degree from the Emory University School of Medicine in 1981. He then went on to perform his internship and residency in anesthesiology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center from 1981 – 1984, and his fellowship in neurosurgical anesthesia at The Johns Hopkins Hospital from 1984 – 1985.

While his subspecialty training was in neurosurgical anesthesia, Dr. Sell also has extensive training and experience in cardiac, pediatric, obstetric, and regional anesthesia. He is board-certified through the American Board of Anesthesiology, the National Board of Echocardiography, and the American Board of Neurophysiologic Monitoring.   

Having achieved the honor of Fellow of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (FASA) in 1970, Dr. Sell is also a member of the Florida Society of Anesthesiologists (serving as Secretary & on the Board of Directors), the International Anesthesia Research Society, the American Society of Neurophysiological Monitoring, the American Clinical Neurophysiology Society, the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia, the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists, the American Society for Regional Anesthesia, the Capital Medical Society, and the Florida Medical Association.

Among his other certifications, he is a provider of Basic Cardiac Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, and Advanced Trauma Life Support.

Anesthesiology is the medical specialty concerned with the total perioperative care of patients before, during, and after surgery. It encompasses anesthesia, intensive care medicine, critical emergency medicine, and pain medicine. Anesthesiologists have the primary responsibility of monitoring the patient’s vital signs during surgery. In addition to basic measurements such as pulse, blood pressure, and temperature, they measure the patient’s respiration.

Viewing medicine as his calling, Dr. Sell attributes his success to hard work, excellent mentors, and good fortune.

His personal interests include flying (licensed private pilot, instrument certified), skydiving (Class A license), traveling, reading, and scuba diving.
