Get to know Medical Oncologist Dr. Thomas Hutson, who serves patients in Dallas, Texas.
An internationally recognized medical oncologist, Dr. Hutson is the Director of the Urologic Oncology Program & Co-Chair of the Urologic Cancer Research and Treatment Center at Baylor University Medical Center, part of Baylor Scott & White Health.
Specializing in genitourinary malignancies (prostate, kidney, bladder and testicular cancers), most of his research has been focused on using novel and targeted treatments for improving the outcome in patients with renal cell carcinoma.
Faith, and the relationship between religion and medicine, has been of particular importance to Dr. Hutson, especially in the area of end-of-life care. He has served as the medical director for Holy Savior Hospice in Dallas, and is an active member of the Christian Medical Dental Association.
Academically, Dr. Hutson received his bachelor’s and Doctor of Pharmacy degrees from Ohio Northern University, and his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine at Ohio University. He then completed his residency in internal medicine, followed by fellowships in medical oncology and experimental therapeutics at the Cleveland Clinic.
Furthering his education, he earned a Master of Biblical and Theological Studies degree from Dallas Theological Seminary and a Master of Divinity degree from The Southern Baptist Theological.
Board-certified in medical oncology and internal medicine, Dr. Hutson is a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.
Teaching medical students, Dr. Hutson serves as a Professor of Medicine at Texas A&M College of Medicine.
Among his professional affiliations, he is an active member of the American Osteopathic Association, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the European Society of Medical Oncology, the Society of Urologic Oncology, the American Medical Association, and the American Society of Hematology. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP).
Oncology is a branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. A medical professional who practices oncology is a medical oncologist. A medical oncologist is a doctor who treats cancer and provides medical care for a person diagnosed with cancer. They lead a cancer treatment team of various healthcare professionals, treat patients with radiation therapy, coordinate treatment plans and prescribe various types of treatment, including chemotherapy and immunotherapy, as well as assist patients with pain management.
Recognized internationally as a leader in the field of urologic cancers, Dr. Hutson has authored over 500 scholarly works, including original research, monographs and book chapters. He is also regularly invited to speak at medical venues around the world, and is the clinical lead investigator on several international research trials.
Happily married, he and his wife, Kimberly Hodges Hutson, reside in Plano with their two sons.
