  • Cold Plunge Time!

One of my favorite things to do is cold plunges. What is that? Well, it’s pretty simple. It is when one jumps, plunges, or immerses oneself into a cold body of water. There is only a brief amount of time spent in that cold water, typically 15-60 seconds, before needing to exit the water.Now,...

  • Tips For Dealing With Smoky Environments With Dr. Sarah Sue Myers

The smoke is out all across the U.S. west coast and beyond. I want to honor and thank all the fire fighters out there, working hard to contain these fires. I used to fight forest fires, before I entered the world of medicine. It’s hard to believe this was an environment I used to work in for six...

  • Is a naturopathic diet recommended in summers?

I am not sure there is such thing as a "naturopathic diet"... Are you thinking about an intensive detox diet? Safe things to detox in the summer - sugar, animal products, alcohol, processed and refined foods. Anything beyond that, I would recommend working with a specialist / health professional - naturopathic doctor, nutritionist, functional medicine practitioner, Ayurvedic practitioner. READ MORE

  • Is there a cure for PCOS with naturopathy?

Naturopathy, and receiving care under a naturopathic provider, will definitely help you manage symptoms, support your healing process and support hormone balance related to conception. That is certain. Conception is never guaranteed, as fertility is even now, a mysterious thing. Even the most "healthy" person can struggle to get pregnant. For you, it begins with prioritizing and taking care of yourself. Naturopathy is amazing for support in all of this. READ MORE

  • Should I take my daughter to a naturopathic physician for her pain during her period?

YES. This could become such a gift for her in the long run. Highly recommend doing that for her. READ MORE

  • Can a naturopathic weight loss program cause side effects?

It is common to experience side effects with rapid weight loss, regardless of the approach. That is a big shift to homeostasis of the body. Additionally, many environmental toxins are lipophilic (fat binding). When one burns fat, it can release these toxins into the bloodstream, that can cause a myriad of symptoms, including fatigue, malaise, other flu-like symptoms, emotional upheaval, skin irritation, flushing, and more. Another concern can be electrolyte imbalance, which is risky when it come to heart function. Again, this is for general rapid weight loss. You will be in safer hands doing it under the supervision of a doctor, like an ND. READ MORE

  • Is there a treatment in naturopathy to treat hair loss?

Yes. In naturopathy, we get to the root cause of a symptom. A better question to think about is WHY one is losing hair? Otherwise, how do you know how to treat it? Common causes of hair loss - low functioning thyroid / hypothyroid and STRESS. READ MORE

  • Does a naturopathic physician treat conditions through medication?

It depends on state licensing. I know, here, in WA state, ND's can prescribe and manage most medications. That is simply one tool in their toolbox though. There are also the lifestyle changes, herbs, homeopathy, nutraceuticals & supplements, hydrotherapy, counseling, teaching, bodywork, and someone who is willing to treat the whole person, listen, find the root cause of symptoms and help to remove obstacles to cure. • How much sunlight do we need?

Sunlight is the best source. Daily sun time depends on several factors - time of the year / season, latitude, altitude, as well as personal factors. For example, some folks have increased sensitivity to sun exposure. That must be respected. READ MORE

  • Is immunization a part of naturopathy medicine?

It depends. Naturopathic Medicine must be licensed in your state - you can check out the map here - https://aanmc.org/licensure/ Some states give naturopathic docs the same scope of practice as medical docs, and in some states, the scope of practice is more limited. READ MORE

  • I have severe bleeding during my periods which leaves me very tired. Can I take some natural supplements during this time?

It would be good to get your iron checked. With heavy blood loss, there is increased risk of iron deficiency anemia. Symptoms include fatigue. There are herbs that are helpful for both slowing bleeding as well as regulating hormones. It is best to consult with a trained professional with specific training in herbal medicine, such as a naturopathic doctor, for your specific picture. READ MORE

  • Does a UTI affect your kidneys?

Yes, it can. UTI stands for urinary tract infection. Urinary tract includes urethra, ureter and kidneys. If left untreated, the infection can spread up into your kidneys, which can be serious, and life threatening. READ MORE

  • Can eczema be treated with homeopathy?

If the right remedy is prescribed, it can help the body to resolve the eczema, as long as any underlying issues / cause of eczema have been revealed and addressed. Eczema does not just simply show up for no reason. The body is reacting to something. Respect and explore that, as well. READ MORE

  • How do you prevent arrhythmia naturally?

I want to share basic prevention to care for the heart with the caveat - this does not replace personal medical care, work up and treatment. Can you treat effectively something you are not fully certain of what it is, or what is causing it? I think, no. I highly encourage making sure you are receiving guidance from your healthcare team, and not doing this alone. None of us should. It is not smart. We are too subjective in our own care. It's like rock climbing - we need a belay. Back to prevention - effective tools for stress management (yoga, meditation, mindfulness, spiritual practice); biofeedback and strengthening heart rate variability; no caffeine, alcohol or smoking; a diet clean of underlying food sensitivities, sugars, processed foods, chemicals, industrial oils; lowering your toxic burden; exploring genetics and family history further; getting regular movement and time outside. Again, these are prevention, not necessarily treatment. READ MORE

  • Is massage or chiropractor better for foot pain?

It really depends on several factors - the training and experience of the practitioner, the etiology of your foot pain, and how you are caring for it yourself. If you go the massage route, my personal preference is to find someone experienced in myofascial work and visceral manipulation. the work is much more specific and gentle. If the foot pain is soft tissue related, that would be the best place to start. They will address your whole body. The foot pain may be a downstream effect from upper body restrictions and imbalances in posture or uneven gait, for example. I do visceral manipulation in my practice. I once treated a patient for foot pain. The only assessment I made with my palpation was liver restriction. Once I addressed that, the foot pain resolved. You just never know... If the foot pain is related to skeletal misalignment, then chiropractor is where you could begin. Other tools to consider - craniosacral therapy, acupuncture, hydrotherapy, changing shoes, orthotics. If persists, make sure to get imaging. READ MORE

  • Is honey safe for kids?

For kiddos under 1 year of age, no honey. After that, they are more likely to have a mature enough immune system to protect from potential botulism. That information is widely accepted and respected, in both conventional and alternative medical communities. Beyond that, I am unsure I am aware of major risks that you potentially are feeling concern. Consuming any sort of raw foods, including honey, can come with risk. And, consuming any high sugar content foods, including honey, can come with risk. Honey, however, has many therapeutic qualities to it, and is used as an ingredient in many herbal medicines. If using honey, source from reliable and respectable sources, use in moderation, and never in children under the age of 1 year old. READ MORE

  • Are there any natural treatments to treat anxiety?

Yes. There are natural treatments for anxiety. However, one size does not always fit all. And, very importantly, whether natural or conventional, is your healthcare team getting to the root cause of the anxiety? Are they treating the whole you? Does counseling count as natural treatment? It should. Connection. Space to be heard and validated. We all need it, especially after the past 2 years... It is a foundation of health, like water and air. And, connection to someone with experience, practice, training, compassion can be essential to supporting your whole self. I highly recommend seeking out counseling, as well as someone like myself - an ND that is trained in natural treatments AND addressing the root cause of illness - to add to your support team. • What is causing the nausea?

There are many reasons that could lead to chronic nausea and vomiting - infection, compromised organ function (ex. liver), chemical sensitivity, chronic exposure of toxins including alcohol, drugs, heavy metals or mold, cancer. It may have a connection to the nervous system. It could be a response to past trauma, mental-emotional stress - both connected to vaso-vagal response. You can encourage her to seek out medical guidance, work-up and care. Get 2nd, 3rd, 4th opinions, if needed. Seek outside conventional medicine, if necessary. However, remember boundaries in this, for you. It is not your job to do any of this for her. She has to ready for that step in her own healing. You can express concern, mirror back what you see, ask her if she wants your support, and if so, what that would look like. READ MORE

  • What are precautions to take for a 14-day only water fasting?

Consult with your primary care doc, and make sure you have no underlying health issues that may need monitoring - kidney & liver function, blood sugar / insulin response, blood pressure monitoring, picture of depletion of major minerals, history of eating disorder, continuing medications are a few examples to tend to. And, ask yourself - is this the step needed right now, or is there a more gentle way, especially if you are not receiving medical supervision. Maybe a simple detox of alcohol, sugar, animal products & processed foods would suffice? READ MORE

  • My daughter is grinding her teeth. What could be the reason behind this?

There could be anxiety in the picture. Jaw tension - especially if at night, while sleeping. Mindfulness practices could do wonders for her and EVERYONE in family. When treating a little with a lifestyle intervention, like diet change or mindfulness practice, it is much more meaningful and sustainable to get whole family, at least parents, engaged. READ MORE
