Dr. Gonnella is a board-certified internist who earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts in 1959. He is the Director of the Center for Research in Medical Education and Health Care at Sidney Kimmel Medical College (SKMC) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Center supports the SKMC faculty and administration in evaluating the knowledge, skills, and professionalism of students throughout the Doctor of Medicine curriculum. Dr. Gonnella is responsible for the development and management of the administrative affairs and academic programs of education, research, and patient care at SKMC. Prior to his current endeavours, Dr. Gonnella served as Distinguished Professor of Medicine (Dean Emeritus) at SKMC.
In the areas of medical education and quality assessment, Dr. Gonnella has served on the board of the National Board of Medical Examiners. He was Chairman of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Medical Education, Chairman of the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, as well as Chairman of the Advisory Panel for the Civilian Peer Review of Military Medical Care Program of the Commission on Professional and Hospital Activities. Furthermore, he has served as a consultant to the World Health Organization and the Ministry of Health of the People’s Republic of China.
As for his many achievements, Dr. Gonnella has been awarded the Order of the Star of Italian Solidarity in 1978, the Grande Ufficiale by the President of Italy in 1995, the Dongbaeg Medal by the President of Korea, the Presidential Medal by Dartmouth College, the Presidential Citation by Thomas Jefferson University, and the Abraham Flexner Award from the Association of American Medical Colleges. He has also received an honorary professorship from Tianjin Medical College in Tianjin, China, and a Distinguished Fellowship from the International Medical University in Malaysia.
His research interests have focused on the relationships between knowledge, capabilities, and actual clinical performance. The results have led to instruments which have been used to evaluate educational programs, measure severity of illness (Disease Staging), and assess the quality of care and costs.
