Dr. Nelson is a compassionate pediatric emergency physician at the University of Vermont Medical Center dedicated to making each child’s experience in the Emergency Department as stress free, quick and efficient as possible. To support his care philosophy, he compliments his clinical care with research in pediatric emergency readiness and preparedness.

Holding a Bachelor of Science degree from Colorado State University, Dr. Nelson earned his medical degree from Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont. He then went on to complete his residency in pediatrics at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine, and his fellowship in pediatric emergency medicine at Hasbro Children’s Hospital.

Dedicated to clinical excellence, the doctor is board-certified in pediatrics and pediatric emergency medicine by the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP). The mission of the ABP is to advance child health by certifying pediatricians who meet standards of excellence and are committed to continuous learning and improvement.

Achieving fellowship status, Dr. Nelson is a Fellow of the American College of Pediatrics, and Fellow of the American Academy of Emergency Medicine.

Among his other roles, he has been involved with The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp since 1998.  He worked as a volunteer physician during the summer program for 20 years before becoming Camp’s Medical Director in 2019. He has also participated as a site visitor in the accreditation process of member camps in the SeriousFun Children’s Network.

Teaching students, Dr. Nelson serves as an Associate Professor of Surgery at the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont.

Pediatrics is the branch of medicine that involves the medical care of infants, children, and adolescents. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends individuals be under pediatric care up to the age of 21. Pediatricians provide medical care to people ranging in age from newborns to young adults.
