Can sciatica pain extend to my leg?

Can a chiropractor help me with my child's GERD?
Thank you for this question. Obviously, GERD can be associated to many things. One of the things I often look at is the bodies possible allergic reaction to certain foods. A great place to start is by journaling food intake on a daily basis for your 3 year old and their reactions to the foods. Then, it’s possible to be able to ascertain if your child has any food sensitivities. This approach can have a twofold approach as well, and that’s where a chiropractic evaluation can be beneficial. As a chiropractor, we are consistently evaluating a patients spine and how misalignments of the vertebrae of the spine can cause nerve irritation. Basically, the central and peripheral nervous systems (nerves) control the entire functioning of the body. If there is some sort of irritation on those nerves, the systems of the body may not function at 100%. So, the question remains: how can chiropractic care help reduce the symptoms of GERD? The nerves that correlate to the esophagus, stomach, etc., reside in the thoracic spine (mid-back area). If, for some reason, there is a vertebral spine misalignment causing nerve irritation in that area, that could mean the body is not able to process the foods correctly, thus possibly creating symptoms of GERD. The only way you could possibly know is by having a chiropractic evaluation and finding out if there is in fact a spinal misalignment. Then, by tracking your child’s diet along with treatments, you may be able to see if there is a benefit. READ MORE
Do chiropractic adjustments help with chronic lower back pain?
There is a simple and a little more complex answer to this question. Quite simply...Yes. Chiropractic adjustments can be very beneficial to relieving chronic lower back pain. However, when evaluating a patient with this past history, it is very crucial to rule out any other complicating factors that may be contributing to this condition. From a little more complex approach though, it is also important to address the soft tissue surrounding the vertebral spine. In essence, when a patient presents with “Chronic” lower back pain, it is often times the soft tissue (muscle, ligaments, etc..) that become effected as well. So, I like to also take an active rehabilitation approach to this type of presenting issue. The chiropractic adjustments will help align the spine back to optimal levels, but addressing the soft tissue thru stretching and strengthening exercises are paramount to creating long term relief from a condition such as chronic low back pain. In summary, if it is determined that the patients presenting issue is neuromuscular in nature, then the adjustments in conjunction with rehabilitation exercises will provide the most benefit. My back has become very hunched. Should I see a chiropractor?
It depends. When evaluating structural changes with in the spine, especially if those changes are causing postural abnormalities, it’s first important to determine if there may be some other potential issues causing the hunched posture. As an example, osteoporosis can be a major contributing factor to a hunched position. Then, after a thorough neuromuscular examination we can often determine how involved the soft tissues are in relation to these changes, and how they may effect pain levels, range of motion and, ultimately, effects on activities of daily living. Moving forward, when all these factors are taken into consideration, it gives the doctor a better understanding of the patients particular subjective and objective issues and allows them to create a treatment plan specific to that patient. Do chiropractors also prescribe medications?
Thank you for the question. Chiropractors do not prescribe medications for pain ailments. In fact, the Chiropractic profession is more of a holistic approach to spinal and neuromuscular conditions. Unfortunately, as necessary as pain meds may be for the very short term, we believe in correcting the source of the problem and not masking the symptoms, as pain meds will often do. This approach gives the patient a better long term outcome, which is always the primary goal. I hope you found this explanation helpful. READ MORE
