What do you attribute your success to?

  • Ronald Hurst, MD has been practicing surgical oncology for 21 years. He is currently the Chief of Surgery at Cedar Sinai Marina Del Ray and has trained physicians on robotic surgery for over a decade.Dr. Hurst knew he wanted to be a doctor at the age of 7 and begin planning that path in elementary school. By the 8th grade he was taking pre-med classes, and as a sophomore in high school, he won 1st place in the LA County Science Fair and 3rd place in the state of California; his science fair project was on diabetes and weight loss.Dr. Hurst spent 20 years in the US Army, with tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. Today one of the many ways he gives back is through the training he does for future surgical oncologists in the residency program. He also helps prepare surgeons to take their oral board exams and speaks at community events on breast and colon cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. When asked what he enjoyed most about his career in surgical oncology, he said \"Seeing just a degree of hope in the face and spirit of my patients--if I can give them that, it\'s better than anything I can do in the operating room. But that takes face to face time with them, and I do that with each of my patients. The \"MD\" behind my name doesn\'t define who I am--everyone is a VIP to me. Who I am is a man of God first, so I pray for my patients every day that He would give them joy and hope.\"
