Back in 1993, Dr. Atienza graduated Magna Cum Laude with her medical degree from the Far Eastern University – Nicanor Reyes Medical Foundation in the Philippines. She then went on to perform her residency in internal medicine at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Chicago in 1995, and her fellowship in geriatric medicine at the University of Louisville in 1999.
Following her training, she attained board certification in both internal medicine and geriatric medicine through the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.
Geriatrics, or geriatric medicine, is a specialty that focuses on health care of elderly people. It aims to promote health by preventing and treating diseases and disabilities in older adults. Geriatricians focus on maintaining patient well-being and independent functioning. They diagnose and treat conditions that may commonly occur with age.
In honor of her clinical expertise, Dr. Atienza has been the recipient of the Patients’ Choice Award (2018).
