He is an expert at performing so-called keyhole (minimally invasive) surgeries, instead of cracking open the chest. For patients, this approach can mean reduced pain and earlier recovery.

As such, he develops and installs heart pumps to support the function of the heart and lungs. He also leads a research group that includes close to a dozen physicians, engineers, and student assistants, all working on developing fully implantable artificial hearts.

As faculty of the Yale School of Medicine Department of Surgery, the surgeons conduct groundbreaking research in aortic surgery, mitral valve repair, aortic valve surgery, experimental mechanical heart and cardiac transplantation programs, as well as vascular biology and transplantation immunology, including the pathogenesis of coronary arteriosclerosis and aneurysm disease.

Throughout his academic career, Dr. Bonde earned his medical degree from the University of Bombay in India in 1993. Before long, he became board-certified in general surgery and thoracic and cardiac surgery by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in 1999 and 2007, respectively.

That same year, he was also awarded the Sezai Innovative Award for developing the novel wireless energy transfer system for powering ventricular assist devices.

Among the doctor’s various roles in professional societies, he serves as MCS/VAD University Course Director for the American Society for Artificial Internal Organs, MCS Course Director for the American Society for Artificial Internal Organs, and Board of Trustees Program Committee Chairman for the American Society for Artificial Internal Organs. Previously, he served on the ISHLT Scientific Council on Mechanical Circulatory Support at the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (2003-2012) and on the ISHLT Scientific Council on Heart Failure and Transplant Medicine at the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (2003-2013).
