Anesthesiology is the medical specialty concerned with the total perioperative care of patients before, during, and after surgery. It encompasses anesthesia, intensive care medicine, critical emergency medicine, and pain medicine. Anesthesiologists have the primary responsibility of monitoring the patient’s vital signs during surgery. In addition to basic measurements such as pulse, blood pressure and temperature, anesthesiologists also measure the patient’s respiration.

Pain medicine is a medical specialty that focuses on the evaluation, treatment, and prevention of pain. A pain management specialist is a physician with special training in the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of all different types of pain. Generally, pain management that is offered at a pain center includes a combination of therapies such as medications, physical therapy, and nerve blocks. In combination, these treatments often offer effective treatment for even the most complex cases.

Being a very conscientious physician, Dr. Zylberger is dedicated to providing state-of-the-art medical treatment and compassionate patient care. He specializes in the evaluation and management of complex spine-related pain stemming from disorders such as spinal stenosis, herniated disc, and failed back surgery. He is an expert in the diagnosis and treatment of neuropathic pain disorders, including complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), as well as lectures nationally on this topic. He also lectures regionally on techniques used to reduce radiation exposure to patients and clinicians.

For years now, he has been involved in several research protocols and has developed lines of research involving chronic pain treatment efficiency, implantable devices for intractable pain, investigational drugs, and efficacy and safety trials of new classes of pain medications for patients with chronic severe pain. He has also made several publications on phantom pain, epidural steroid injections, and radiation safety. More recently, Dr. Zylberger has taken over the Directorship of the Pain Management Center at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and plans to develop it into a flagship Pain Center.
