Molars can be easily replaced with dental implants. The biggest consideration is the amount of bone available for the implant. Molars that have been missing for many years might have minimal bone and need bone grafting prior to implant placement. READ MORE

Can cavities form under sealants?

There are a number of different types of bone grafting procedures. The most common ones are in extraction sockets, and those generally take 10-12 weeks. More advanced ridge augmenting grafts with cortical bone grafts take 8 months. READ MORE

Why does my 5 year old have so many cavities?
There is a genetic component to teeth. However, poor oral hygiene and excess sugar intake can exasperate the genetic component. In young children and toddlers, nursing bottles filled with milk or juice is the greatest cause of excess cavities. You should never put you child to sleep with a bottle unless it is just plain water. Of course, if you live in a rural community where there is no fluoride in the drinking water, then you should supplement with fluoride drops as a lack of fluoride in drinking water makes teeth more susceptible to decay. Is it necessary to get fillings in baby teeth?
Generally, the answer is definitively yes! It is very important to have baby teeth filled in order for proper orthodontic development of adult teeth. Obviously, a baby tooth that is expected to fall out soon should be easily determined by your dentist as to the need for a filling. Dr. Akmakjian started off young and has been practicing dentistry since 1984 in Long Grove, Illinois. The Founder of Long Grove Dental, he is committed to providing top quality dental care and is devoted to keeping personal “comfort” in mind.

Long Grove Dental is a full-service practice, which provides all phases of dentistry to help accommodate patients’ dental needs in a friendly and relaxed environment. Services include comprehensive dental care, restorative care, implant dentistry, endodontic treatment (root canal therapy), porcelain crowns, fixed bridges, dentures (full or partial), oral surgery (gum surgery and wisdom teeth extractions), orthodontic treatment (braces), and cosmetic dentistry including in-house bleaching (BriteSmile™).

Having earned people’s trust and admiration for his extraordinary talent in dental care, Dr. Akmakjian works alongside his son, Dr. James Akmakjian, bringing art and science together to improve the lives of patients. The dental-duo combine their artistic backgrounds with knowledge of up-to-date technologies relating to all aspects of dentistry.

After graduating as Valedictorian of his high school class, Dr. Akmakjian attended Northwestern University, completing his bachelor’s degree. He then went on to earn his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Northwestern University Dental School in 1984, where he served as Class President.

Furthering his education, he completed advancing training, including: dental implant surgery residency maxicourse, advanced implant symposium, perio surgery advanced course, dental implant for the advanced practitioner, and advanced bone grafting seminar.

An Associate Fellow of the American Academy of Implantology, Dr. Akmakjian is a member of the American Dental Association, the Chicago Dental Society, the Illinois State Dental Association, and the American Orthodontic Society – Continuing Education Member.

Dentistry, also known as Dental and Oral Medicine, is a branch of medicine that consists of the study, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases, disorders, and conditions of the oral cavity. Dentists diagnose and treat dental issues and help patients develop better oral hygiene regimens. They clean teeth, correct bite issues, perform surgeries and extractions, and perform other duties to ensure that the teeth and mouth are healthy.

Among his various honors, Dr. Akmakjian received recognition from the Consumers’ Research Council of America and was presented with the “America’s Top Dentists Award” for his extraordinary dental care. He was also named one of “Chicagoland’s Leading Dental Professionals” by Chicago Magazine (2005, 2006) and presented with the National Leadership Award.
