In 1987 Dr. Pain earned his medical degree at the University of Texas Medical Branch . He went on to complete a residency at Methodist Medical Center in 1990 and a fellowship at UT Southwestern Medical School in 1994. 

Dr. Pain is an active member of the American Board of Internal Medicine, American Board of Internal Medicine Medical Oncology, American Board of Internal Medicine Hematology, American Society of Clinical Oncology, American Society of Hematology, American College of Physicians, Texas Medical Association, North American Neuroendocrine Tumor Society, and Travis County Medical Society. 

Hematology-Oncology is a medical specialty concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of blood diseases (hematology) and cancer (oncology) and research into them. As a hematologist-oncologist, Dr. Fain specializes in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of blood diseases such as anemia, hemophilia, sickle-cell disease, leukemia and lymphoma. 

With over 30 years of experience in the field, Dr. Fain has treated thousands of patients. He was recognized and awarded the “Jeweled Key Award” in cardiology in 1983 and has been published twice, in the “Society for Neuro-Oncology” in 2017 and the “Journal of Thoracic Oncology” in 2010.
