Dr. Harold Barkate practices Orthodontics in Newport Beach, CA. Comprehensive orthodontic treatment includes metal wires that are inserted into orthodontic brackets, which can be made from stainless steel or a more aesthetic ceramic material. The wires interact with the brackets to move teeth into desired positions. Being advanced in the field, Dr. Barkate may also use Invisalign or other aligner trays that have been designed to align a patients? smile. As an orthodontist, Dr. Barkate must recognize various characteristics of a malocclusion or dentofacial deformity, define the nature of the problem, including the etiology if possible, and design a treatment strategy based on the specific needs and desires of the patient.

  • What are some options for an adult looking to straighten their teeth?

As an adult, very important you see an orthodontic specialist. Braces, or clear aligners are really the only two effective options. An orthodontic specialist can tell you pros and cons of both, and know the special considerations when straightening teeth in adults i.e. periodontal (gum), bite, tooth wear, previous dental work issues, etc.. • What are the factors to identify a bite correctness problem?

Some bite problems are very obvious, but mild bite issues can be only identified by an Orthodontist. They can easily show you and explain at an exam. Basically: Your teeth should fit like "gears". The tips of upper teeth fit between the lower teeth in a particular way that is called a "Class I" bite, which is just a dental description of an ideal bite. A proper bite is important so you do not excessively wear down your teeth. READ MORE

  • My son's permanent teeth are growing crooked. What should I do?

Best advice is to see an Orthodontist. He/She can tell you if there is an issue, and if this is the best time to address. Crooked back teeth are at risk for excessive tooth wear (attrition). READ MORE

  • My son's permanent teeth are growing crooked. Should I take him to an orthodontist?

Crooked teeth in and of itself doesn't mean you "need" braces. I'd take them in to see an Orthodontic specialist to evaluate if any correction is needed at this time. Crooked teeth are harder to clean effectively, so more susceptible to plaque accumulation, cavities and gum disease. READ MORE

  • How long does it take for teeth to set with retainers?

Yes, wear you retainers as long as you want your teeth to stay straight. You may only need to wear them a few nights a week after the first year of regular use. We dentist do not know who's teeth will be more likely to move than other patients. so we recommend to everyone to wear retainers long term. Retainers will wear down over the years, so get new ones from your orthodontist before they stop fitting well. It's cheaper than getting braces again. READ MORE

  • Can clenching my teeth cause them to erode?

Yes, "clenching and grinding" or what dentist call "Bruxism" can cause loss of tooth structure which is called "attrition" due to teeth excessively wearing down. This can lead to tooth sensitivity, fractured teeth and TMJ/TMD among other related issues. A good place to start with your dentist is a night guard. READ MORE

  • My daughter is 13 years old and has a bite problem. What will be the course of treatment?

Assuming your are describing an under-bite (anterior cross-bite). Hard to say what best treatment would be without seeing the severity, but options are, but not limited to: Mild: Braces and elastics (rubber bands) Moderate: Lower teeth extractions + braces Severe: Braces + jaw surgery Note: sometimes we can use a "reveres pull face mask (headgear)", but at age 13, this may not be as effective as if used at young age. An Orthodontic Specialist is definitely recommended to advise in these cases. READ MORE

  • My 9 year old son is getting his permanent teeth, but they are not in order. What should I do?

The order of adult teeth eruption may be a big problem, sometimes not. Depending on which teeth and why it's happening. Your Pediatric dentist, or Orthodontic specialist will easily be able to tell you if it's a big issue and how to address. READ MORE
