An expert Orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Busfield is in his 14th year of practice after his Sports Medicine Fellowship at the famous Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic. He is board certified in both Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine. His offices are in the East Bay Area and he operates at several local hospitals and surgery centers.
Able to offer the entire spectrum of care including biologic treatments such Platelet rich plasma (PRP) injections, non-operative care including injection therapies, and minimally invasive surgeries, he has extensive training in sports medicine and joint replacement. He performs total hip, total knee, partial knee, as well as shoulder replacements, and is now utilizing the 3D printed implant for total knee replacements for custom made and anatomic fit.
Academically, he earned his medical degree from the Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C.. He then went on to complete his internship and residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of California, San Francisco, and his fellowship at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic. Furthermore, he has been awarded the Certificate of Additional Qualification (CAQ) for orthopedic sports medicine.
Throughout his training, Dr. Busfield had a special interest in caring for the injured athlete. During his fellowship, he assisted in the orthopedic care of Los Angeles professional sports teams including the Dodgers, Lakers, Ducks, Sparks, and Kings.
A Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery (FAAOS), the doctor is board-certified in orthopedic surgery by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS). The ABOS is an organization with the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for orthopedic residents and surgeons as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopedic surgeons. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS).
In the peer-reviewed literature, Dr. Busfield has researched, written and published numerous papers regarding sports medicine and joint replacement. Recently, his research interests were focused on rotator cuff arthroscopic repair, pain pumps, and shoulder surgery. His research has focused on ACL injuries in the National Basketball Association and the use of pain pumps after shoulder surgery.
Dr. Busfield is also experienced as an expert witness, and commonly sees Workers Compensation related patients and personal injury patients.
