I'm farsighted and have a slight astigmatism - should I wear my glasses all the time?
I advise returning to your eye doctor and asking for a glasses re-check if you are seeing blurry. And ask if you should wear these glasses when at the computer which is a common request from my patients to help relieve their eye strain and fatigue while working at their computer, especially these past 2 1/2 years! Bulged right eye?
It was the right thing to see your ophthalmologist to check for orbital cellulitis and to have your thyroid levels measured for TED. I’m glad you had an MRI which would have been my suggestion. Did they do both a non-contrast as well as a contrast-enhanced orbital MRI? Further testing could be a non-contrast CT of your orbital area under the care of your medical doctor to check for cavernous hemangioma. Thank you for the question. I hope you discover a diagnosis. Are there any treatment for bulging eyes?
For treatment of bulging eyes, it would be a good plan to make an appointment with your primary care physician. They should be able to do the tests for medical conditions such as thyroid eye disease or any other conditions. READ MORE
Are diabetics at a higher risk for developing cataracts?
Thank you for your concern about your mother’s vision. The quick answer is yes, patients who are Diabetic for many years or if A1-c is uncontrolled are at higher risk of developing cataracts early. But if your mother keeps her blood sugar under control and keeps her A1-c level 7.0 or below may develop cataracts at the normal rate of 65 and older. Yearly eye exams are very important to monitor for other complications of diabetes such as retinal hemorrhaging which unfortunately can be sight-threatening if left untreated. But don’t be too worried about mature cataracts. Cataract surgery has one of the very best rates of satisfaction and also has the potential to improve quality of life. Some of my patients chose distance-only lens implants which insurance covers and then they only use over-the-counter readers. Other patients chose to upgrade with multifocal implants and thus they only occasionally wear eyeglasses after their cataracts are removed. READ MORE
What treatment do you recommend for amblyopic eye?
It’s important to wear her corrective glasses or contacts to ensure that her eye with amblyopia will have the best possible vision. I usually remind patients to buy safety lenses in their glasses to protect the good eye from hazards. Some Optometrists recommend eye patching to work and try to improve the amblyopic eye and the times depend on many factors. There are patching schedules of 30 minutes all the way up to 4 hours per day while watching TV. Discuss those schedules with her optometrist. READ MORE
Can steam irritate my eyes?
Yes, hot steam can cause the cornea to swell and get cloudy. But if you keep your eyes closed when applying steam to your sinuses, the warmth can open up oil glands in the eyelids which helps balance the tear film, as long as the steam is not too hot. The temperature for oil glands is 103-110 degrees Fahrenheit for 5-10 minutes. Mischelle Gragg, Therapeutic Optometrist Houston Eye Professionals at Baybrook. READ MORE
Is there any way to treat squinty eyes without surgery?
Is your son an adult? There is a new eye drop for adults with benign eyelid ptosis. He should see his Optometrist for a medical evaluation to rule out any health conditions before they could prescribe this new eye drop. You can research Upneeq.com for more information. READ MORE
Where to get glasses?
Most people wear eyeglasses to correct vision problems or they wear sunglasses to protect their eyes and eyelids from sun damage or even blue blocker lenses to protect their eyes from our cell phone’s ultraviolet light. I suggest seeing your local Optometrist for a vision test and eye health exam. They usually have an optical with a large selection of frames to choose from. An optician will help you find a frame that fits the bridge of your nose and is balanced properly on your face for good fit and comfort as well as style. READ MORE
Should I wear my glasses all the time? (Different prescription)
If you have headaches without your eyeglasses then you should wear them. If you don’t feel eye strain without the glasses, then just wear them for distance. You are fortunate to have no prescription in your left eye and a mild prescription for myopia in your left eye. Remember to wear sunglasses outdoors. Eyeglasses can also be used as safety protection when participating in hazardous activities. READ MORE

Some of the newer brands of contact lenses offer UV protection for the small amount of ultraviolet light that emanates from computers and digital devices. Remember to always wear sunglasses for protection from the sun which has far more UV light. READ MORE
What happens if I am exposed to a lot of dust?
I advise that you use artificial tears to rinse the dust out of your eyes. If the dust contains particles of metal or bacteria it’s wise to use saline or moisture drops to rinse the dust out of your eyes. I don’t advise eye rubbing which could scratch your corneas. If your eyes get red or begin to hurt, you should see your Optometrist for an evaluation. READ MORE
Can you fix a lazy eye?
There are many types and levels of “lazy eye” and each has specialized vision therapies we recommend. Sometimes in mild “amblyopia” wearing prescribed glasses can help neural development of the “lazy eye”. Other times children and even adults may show vision improvement from wearing glasses with scheduled patching of their better eye to practicing looking with their “lazy eye” when watching TV. In other cases, the doctor may recommend muscle surgery if one eye has a constant eye turn called strabismus. Make an appointment with your Optometrist to make the proper recommendations. READ MORE
How long do dry eye drops take to work?
Your question is, "How long do dry eye drops take to work?"The answer is complex depending on many individual factors. It is best to make an appointment with your optometrist for a thorough dry eye medical evaluation with testing to determine your best therapies and various treatment options. Over-the-counter artificial tear drops relieve some symptoms of dry eyes immediately and last for 5-20 minutes. An Optometrist can prescribe Restasis or Xiidra eye drops as well as other dry eye treatments which can begin to improve signs and symptoms of dry eyes within a few weeks of regular use. We would be happy to see you! READ MORE
Right swollen eyelid?
Is it painful to touch your right upper eyelid? It could be stye or hordeolum that is forming inside your eyelid. It’s recommended to apply warm compresses to the exact location of the bump but not to the other areas because the entire lid swells with heat. When you visit your optometrist they will thoroughly evaluate your eyelid and they may even need to prescribe eye drops or even antibiotic tablets if your condition worsens. READ MORE
Double vision and other symptoms?
With your double vision and eyelid symptoms and previous history of a lazy eye, you should definitely see an Optometrist. Your Optometrist can perform a thorough eye exam and prescribe safety glasses to protect your good eye. I recommend you perform a visual field test to evaluate the black spot that you see in the upper corner of your vision in your right eye. Your Optometrist can also look at the lump in your eyelid and give you better answers than I can with just an email and no photos of either eyelid. I hope you set up an appointment with an Optometrist. I would be happy to see you if you are in the Friendswood area. READ MORE

Why do my eyes turn bloodshot by the end of the day?
There are many different potential causes of red eyes at the end of the day. An in person eye health exam with an eye doctor is the best for evaluating your cornea, eyelids, conjunctiva and measuring intra ocular pressure. With computer use increasing, another cause of redness could be that you need an updated glasses prescription or healthier types of the newest UV protection contact lenses. An Optometrist like myself would be happy to do a thorough eye exam to determine the cause and then recommend the best treatment for your eyes. READ MORE
