Recognized as the first provider in the San Antonio area for home dialysis, Dr. Szewc has extensive training and experience in the management of chronic kidney disease, hypertension, and anemia. What’s more, his knowledge of dialysis and end-stage renal disease is unsurpassed. He has publications dealing with renal stenting and distal embolization protection; plaque extension below the knee for limb salvage in patients with end-stage renal disease and diabetes.
In addition to his research experience in kidney disease treatment, with both hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis, the doctor is board-certified in both internal medicine and nephrology by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.
To further his professional development, he remains a member of several professional organizations, including the Renal Physicians Association, the American Society of Diagnostic and Interventional Nephrology, the Bexar County Medical Society, and the Texas Medical Association.
Back in 1991, Dr. Szewc earned his medical degree from the Medical University of Lublin in Poland. Upon relocating to the United States, he completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at UMASS Memorial Health Care in Worcester, Massachusetts, where he served as chief resident. He then went on to complete his fellowship in nephrology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. His training includes interventional nephrology procedures such as fistulagrams with percutaneous transluminal interventions.
Nephrology is a specialty of medicine and pediatrics that concerns itself with the kidneys. It is the study of normal kidney function and kidney disease, the preservation of kidney health, and the treatment of kidney disease, from diet and medication to renal replacement therapy. Nephrologists have advanced training in treating kidney disease. They diagnose and treat kidney failure, as well as help patients by prescribing medications, offering special diet advice, and coordinating dialysis care when the time comes.
In recognition of his accomplishments and contributions to the field of nephrology, Dr. Szewc is the recipient of numerous awards, including the ESRD Network of Texas Superior Performance Award in Hemodialysis, the ESRD Fistula First Benchmark Facility Award (2010), and Top Doctor by Global Who’s Who, to name a few.
Outside of the office, Dr. Szewc volunteers his time to local orphanages. He also enjoys traveling, skiing, playing tennis and other outdoor sports, as well as spending time with his family.
