Get to know Cardiothoracic Surgeon Dr. George J. Reul, who serves patients in Houston, Texas.

Dr. Reul is a cardiothoracic surgeon who is affiliated with Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center, the private adult hospital of the Baylor College of Medicine jointly owned with CHI St. Luke’s Health.

A 1962 graduate of the Medical College of Wisconsin, Dr. Reul went on to perform his internship at the University of Chicago. He then completed his residency in general surgery at Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals, and his fellowship in thoracic surgery at Baylor College of Medicine.

With over six decades of experience, the doctor is board-certified through the American Board of Surgery, and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. The American Board of Surgery is an independent, nonprofit organization founded in 1937 to provide board certification to individuals who have met a defined standard of education, training and knowledge in the field of surgery. In addition to being a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Reul is a member of the Society for Vascular Surgery. 

A cardiothoracic surgeon is a medical doctor who specializes in surgical procedures of the heart, lungs, esophagus, and other organs in the chest. This includes surgeons who can be called cardiac surgeons, cardiovascular surgeons, general thoracic surgeons, and congenital heart surgeons.

His residency was interrupted by his military service which was conducted between 1966 and 1968. In his first year, he was a Captain in the US Army Medical Corp and Surgeon for the 93rd Evacuation Hospital and the 24th Evacuation Hospital in Long Binh, Republic of Vietnam. He spent his second year of military service as a Surgical Consultant to the Wound Data and Munitions Effectiveness Team (WDMET), where he researched and developed munitions, ballistics, and body armor.

In addition, he completed his residency in thoracic surgery at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX. Prior to medical school, he acquired a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, Chemistry, and Philosophy from Marquette University.
