For my patients with an anxiety disorder, the usual course of medications lasts between several months and a lifetime treatment. Based on your description of your sister, the time is right now. She should call her primary care physician for an appointment. If the PCP thinks a consultation with a psychiatrist would be better, the PCP will recommend that. Is it safe to drink alcohol while taking Zoloft?
For my patients, I generally recommend not drinking alcohol during the initial phase of treatment, but after they are fully well, occasional alcohol is generally fine, as long as it is not regularly consumed. I strongly recommend you discuss this with your treating physician. READ MORE
At night, thinking prevents me from sleeping. Can I do anything about it?
If this has been a problem for a while, you would be best served by a consultation with your primary care physician. There are so many causes of insomnia, and so many treatments, that I can't give you a specific recommendation for a treatment without an exam, and understanding what is causing your insomnia. While this answer may depend on what state you are in, my understanding is that a child under 18 does not have legal confidentiality, and the parent has the legal right to treatment knowledge. If you have a true alcohol addition, you need to receive specific treatment for that. Indeed, we now have treatments that are safe and effective for alcohol use disorder. Psychiatrists used to be trained solidly in both general medicine and psychotherapy, as I was. Now, most Psychiatrists do mostly medication treatment. I suggest you call around to find a Psychiatrist who does both, and get a solid evaluation. You may very well be surprised to find that both psychotherapy and medications are appropriate, but you would never know that if you go to a Psychologist for a specific treatment, instead of an evaluation.
