Get to know Orthopedic Specialist Dr. Brandon H. Downs, who serves the population of Tennessee.

Dr. Brandon Downs is board-certified in orthopaedic surgery with the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery with additional fellowship training in Sports Medicine. He comes from a medical family and is a Nashville native.  Both Dr. Downs’ father and brother have practiced medicine in the Nashville community.

For his undergraduate degree, Dr. Downs attended college at Belmont Universityas a Presidential Scholar.  The Belmont University Presidential Scholarship is a full 4-year scholarship based upon academic achievement and leadership and athletic achievement. Dr. Downs graduated Magna Cum Laude from Belmont University. 

In 2000, Dr. Downs graduated medical school at Loma Linda University School of Medicine in Loma Linda, California. During medical school, Dr. Downs was a Student Researcher and a Clinical Researcher in the Department of OrthopaedicsTribology Research Laboratory.Tribology is the study of wear, friction and lubrication.  In this laboratory Dr. Downs researched total joint arthroplasty implants on knee and hip simulators. Based on this and other research during medical school, Dr. Downs was awarded the Loma Linda School of Medicine Bertakisand StarichAward for Student Researcher of the year.

He graduated from Loma Linda School of Medicine as an Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) scholar.  This designation reflects his entrance into an honor society and that he graduated in the top 10% of his medical school class.

Dr. Downs’ orthopaedic surgery residency training was completed at the world-renowned Campbell Clinic and University of Tennessee in Memphis, Tennessee.  Following residency, Dr. Downs achieved board certification in orthopaedics through the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Downs is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery and many other medical societies.

Pursuing additional training in orthopaedic sports medicine following residency Dr. Downs attended a full-year, accredited Sports Medicine Fellowship at the prestigious Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio.

Following fellowship training in Sport Medicine Orthopaedics, Dr. Downs achieved a Certificate of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine from the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and the AmericanOrthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine.

Orthopaedic Specialists, PLLC includes multiple medical providers.  Dr. Downs has Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners and Physical Therapists who are all involved in his practice in the care of the orthopaedic patient.

Dr. Brandon Downs provides care of the orthopaedic patient in all areas of sports medicine, minimally-invasive total joint arthroplasty and general orthopaedics. He holds expertise in all areas of Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy of the shoulder including: rotator cuff repair; labral tearing, shoulder Instability, biceps tendon diseases, shoulder impingement, acromioclavicular joint injuries, and shoulder arthritis. 

Additionally, Dr. Downs provides care in all areas of sports Medicine and Arthroscopy of the knee including: Anterior Cruciate Ligament Tearing, Posterior Cruciate Ligament Tearing, Collateral Ligament Tearing, Meniscus repair or Meniscectomy, Articular Cartilage repair, Patellofemoral tracking disorders, and Unicompartmental and full knee arthritis.

He also provides care in areas such as elbow disorders and instability and ankle disorders and instability, etc. He provides minimally invasive joint replacement of the shoulder, elbow, knee and hip.  These procedures are frequently performed using custom implants and computer-navigated total joint arthroplasty. 

The first computer-navigated total shoulder arthroplasty in Tennessee was performed by Dr. Downs. He is a design surgeon for multiple orthopaedic companies, and  serves as lecturer for multiple orthopaedic societies and companies, and is the author of many peer-reviewed publications and book chapters.
