Get to know Cardiologist Dr. Javier Roman-Gonzalez, who serves patients throughout the State of Texas.

Dr. Roman-Gonzalez is a board-certified cardiologist affiliated with Methodist Physicians South Texas Cardiovascular Consultants, seeing patients at their offices in San Antonio, Boerne, Kerrville, and Fredericksburg, Texas. His greatest passion is the treatment of atrial fibrillation, notably in the advancing field of minimally-invasive catheter ablation. He also performs left atrial appendage occlusion procedures with the Watchman device to reduce the risk of stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation who need an alternative to warfarin.

Methodist Physicians South Texas Cardiovascular Consultants are dedicated to providing preventive care, diagnostics and treatment options to our patients with heart disease. In addition to offering cutting-edge clinical trials, procedures and devices, their highly skilled team of cardiologists consists of interventional and non-interventional cardiologists, clinical cardiac electrophysiologists and nurse practitioners.

As an adolescent, Dr. Roman-Gonzalez watched his mother, a nurse in the OR, and knew he never wanted to do anything other than practice medicine. He received his medical degree from the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine in 1991. He then completed his internship and residency training in internal medicine at Emory University Hospital, where, during his cardiology rotation, he was inspired by Dr. Paul Walter who started the arrhythmia/electrophysiology service there in 1980.

Subsequently, he completed his fellowship in cardiovascular disease at the Wilford Hall Medical Center at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas, followed by his fellowship in clinical cardiac electrophysiology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

Passionate about his profession, the doctor is board certified in cardiovascular disease, clinical cardiac electrophysiology, and internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Cardiology is a branch of medicine that deals with the disorders of the heart, as well as some parts of the circulatory system. The field includes medical diagnosis and treatment of congenital heart defects, coronary artery disease, heart failure, valvular heart disease, and electrophysiology. Cardiologists are doctors who diagnose, assess, and treat patients with diseases and defects of the heart and blood vessels (the cardiovascular system).

Among his most notable achievements, Dr. Roman-Gonzalez has been the recipient of the Patients' Choice Award (2018, 2017, 2016), On-Time Doctor Award (2018, 2014), and Compassionate Doctor Recognition (2017, 2016).
