Can frequent episodes of cough in a toddler be a cause of concern?
Cough is one of the most common symptoms of illness in childhood. It can have multiple causes, most commonly from viral respiratory infections. These are often picked up in settings like day cares and schools. Cough from these infections can last for several days before it goes away completely. Get to know Pediatric Pulmonologist Dr. Saumini Srinivasan, who serves patients throughout the State of Tennessee.
As a board-certified and fellowship-trained pediatric pulmonologist, Dr. Srinivasan specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic lung disease of infants, children, and adolescents. She serves as the Director of the University of Tennessee Cystic Fibrosis Center and as an Associate Professor of The University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, Tennessee.
With patient care emphasis on pediatric pulmonology, cystic fibrosis, exercise physiology, exercise stress testing, and sleep disorders, Dr. Srinivasan is an attending physician at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, Le Bonheur Children’s Outpatient Center – Jackson, Le Bonheur Outpatient Center, and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
A member of the American Thoracic Society, she is board-certified in pediatrics and pediatric pulmonology by the American Board of Pediatrics, which is an independent and nonprofit organization that was founded in 1933. It is one of the 24 certifying boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties.
In the early days of her academic career, Dr. Srinivasan earned her medical degree from the University College of Medical Sciences in Delhi, India. Upon relocating to the United States, she completed her internship at Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center in the Bronx, New York, followed by her residency in pediatrics at UCLA Medical Center. Wanting to further her training, she completed her fellowship in pediatric pulmonology within the Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine at the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, where she was awarded the Chun-I-Wang Award for Excellence in Pulmonary Research. She also completed an additional fellowship at Duke Children’s Hospital & Health Center in Durham, North Carolina.
