He holds expertise on ways to enhance recovery of function after stroke led to multiple foundation and industry-sponsored investigations into the use of targeted electrical/magnetic stimulation of the brain in motor and language impairment following stroke and developing and validating advanced imaging methods to detect traumatic injuries in mild cases of closed head injury.Dr. Benson has spearheaded the use of new MRI techniques (e.g., DTI, SWI, PWI, MRSI, fMRI) to brain trauma which is often occult to clinical imaging.

Dr. Benson completed his undergraduate degree from Washington University where he graduated with honors with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology in 1982. Furthering his education he then graduated with his Medical Degree from Hahnemann University in 1987, where he was part of the Senior Honors Program giving him over three decades of experience in his field. After obtaining his medical degree, he completed his internal medicine internship with the Crozer-Chester Medical Center, followed by a neurology residency with the Boston University School of Medicine. Wanting to further his training he then completed his Behavioral Neurology and Functional Neuroimaging fellowship with the Massachusetts General Hospital.

Dr. Benson is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. To stay up to date in his field he remains a professional member of the American Academy of Neurology, Society of Behavioral Neurology, Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine, National Neurotrauma Society, International Neurotrauma Society, Metropolitan Professional Honor Society, and the North American Brain Injury Society.
