Do you talk while under anesthesia?
This depends on the type of anesthesia. Patients under general anesthesia do not talk and are unconscious for the entire procedure. This type of anesthesia is common for procedures such as gall bladder removal, appendix removal, brain surgeries, hysterectomies. Other types of anesthesia involve minimal to heavy sedation. Pt who are sedated for procedures that do not require being totally asleep may talk but often do not recall what they may say or ask nor do they recall the procedure. As a board certified Anesthesiologist, it is our responsibility to ensure your comfort and safety throughout many types of procedures. READ MORE
What kind of anesthesia is used for colon surgery?
General anesthesia is the most common type of anesthesia for colon surgeries. This type of anesthesia is where the patient is made unconscious and is totally asleep for the entire procedure. This can sometimes be combined with nerve blocks and/or epidurals to help control pain postoperatively but most often the patient is totally asleep for the actual surgery. READ MORE
Is it okay to be sleepy after anesthesia?
Yes, it is very common to be sleepy after anesthesia. We have had tremendous progress with short acting drugs for anesthesia so patients can function and wake up more rapidly, however, even with the shortest acting anesthetic, it is common to remain sleepy throughout the rest of the day and we do no recommend making any major decisions during that time frame. Anesthesiology is the medical specialty concerned with the total perioperative care of patients before, during, and after surgery. It encompasses anesthesia, intensive care medicine, critical emergency medicine, and pain medicine. Anesthesiologists have the primary responsibility of monitoring the patient’s vital signs during surgery. In addition to basic measurements such as pulse, blood pressure, and temperature, they measure the patient’s respiration.
As a testament to his success, Dr. Croley has published multiple manuscripts and abstracts related to critical care and medical education. In February 2006, he received recognition from the American College of Chest Physicians for his role as Co-Director of an International Medical Simulation Workshop in Montreal.
