Get to know Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Scott Appell, who serves patients in Birmingham, Alabama.

Dr. Appell, a well-known orthopedic surgeon, specializes in total joint replacements such as anterior hip replacements, shoulder surgical intervention, and arthroscopy of the shoulder, hip, and knee. He is in practice with Lemak Health in Birmingham, Alabama.

Lemak Health was founded by world-renowned orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Lawrence Lemak—also widely known as Dr. Larry Lemak. As Head of the Advanced Joint Care Program at Grandview Medical Center, he leads a modern patient and family teaching facility that provides educational pre-surgery joint classes, a dedicated inpatient unit, inpatient therapy services, and outpatient therapy services.

After receiving his bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences from the University of Florida, Dr. Appell continued his education at the University of Florida College of Medicine where he ranked in the top percentile of his class. He then attended the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine where he completed his general surgery internship, orthopedic surgery residency, and microvascular surgery residency.

With a desire to continually refine his skills and expertise, the doctor is board-certified in orthopedic surgery by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS). The ABOS is an organization with the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for orthopedic residents and surgeons as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopedic surgeons.

Serving the interests of his industry, Dr. Appell is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the Jefferson County Medical Society, the Jefferson County Orthopedic Society, the Alabama State Medical Association, the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, and the American Medical Association.

Orthopedic surgery is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopedic surgeons use both surgical and non-surgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders.

Among his numerous accolades, Dr. Appell has been the recipient of Patients’ Choice Award (2008, 2009, 2017, 2018), Compassionate Doctor Recognition (2014, 2016, 2017, 2018), and On-Time Doctor Award (2014, 2018).

When he is not in the office, he can be found spending time with his three daughters and enjoying days with his family. In his spare time, he enjoys playing golf and being outside in the beautiful weather.
