Alexander Shifrin, MD, is an endocrine surgeon with Atlantic Medical Group CentraState Surgical Oncology and surgical director, CentraState Endocrine Program. He is board-certified in surgery by the American Board of Surgery, and in endocrine neck ultrasound and ultrasound-guided thyroid biopsy by the American College of Endocrinology. In addition, he is the first endocrine surgeon in the United States to have board certification in endocrine surgery (FEBS), a designation available only through the European Board of Surgery. He completed two fellowship training programs: one in trauma and surgical critical care, and a second in endocrine surgery.
A national and international leader in the management of complex endocrine diseases, Dr. Shifrin has specific expertise
in minimally invasive surgical procedures to treat endocrine cancers and diseases of the thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal glands. These include thyroid gland diseases such as: thyroid cancer, multinodular goiter, Graves’ disease; parathyroid gland diseases such as: primary hyperparathyroidism, secondary and tertiary hyperparathyroidism; adrenal gland diseases such as: Cushing’s syndrome, primary hyperaldosteronism (Conn’s syndrome), pheochromocytoma, and adrenal incidentaloma; familial endocrine syndromes; and other hereditary endocrine syndromes. Utilizing an evidence-based approach, Dr. Shifrin employs state-of-the-art techniques to perform hundreds of surgeries each year with precision, accuracy, and extremely high success rates. He works in collaboration with other specialists to provide patients leading- edge cancer treatments in a safe environment. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), Fellow of the American College of Endocrinology (FACE), and Fellow of the International Society of Surgery (FISS).
Dr. Shifrin has edited and authored several books and atlases, including the Atlas of Thyroid Surgery, Atlas of Parathyroid Surgery, Atlas of Adrenal Surgery, Atlas of Parathyroid Imaging and Pathology, Endocrine Emergencies, Advances in Treatment and Management in Surgical Endocrinology, and Endocrine Surgery Comprehensive Board Exam Guide, book chapters, and peer-reviewed papers. He is also a frequent speaker at national and international conferences.
Dr. Shifrin pursued extensive surgery residency training at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, followed by Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. Dr. Shifrin is a full Professor of Surgery at Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine and Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He is a participating provider of the Atlantic Accountable Care Organization.

Get to know Surgeon Dr. Alexander L. Shifrin, who serves patients in Neptune, New Jersey.
Board certified surgeon, Dr. Shifrin, is currently serving Neptune and the surrounding communities in New Jersey. He is affiliated with Jersey Shore University Medical Center, a not-for-profit academic medical center, and one of the busiest medical centers in the state, it is a university medical center affiliate of UMDNJ Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. They aim to improve the health of the community and advance medicine through clinical care, teaching, and research.
Dr. Shifrin established the first Endocrine Surgery Program at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in 2006. The Program has received a designated status by the Center for Thyroid, Parathyroid and Adrenal Diseases. Under Dr Shifrin's leadership has gained state, national, and international recognition for clinical excellence in the management of complex endocrine diseases including thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal problems and endocrine syndromes, research, and training of residents and students. Additionally, he has served as the Medical Director of Endocrine Oncology at Hackensack Meridian Health System
In regards to his education, Dr. Shifrin earned his Doctor of Medicine from St. Petersburg I.I. Mechnikov State Medical Academy in 1992. He went on to complete a residency in pediatric surgery at St. Maria Magdalene’s Children’s Hospital in 1993 and an internship in general surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in 1999. Furthering his training he then completed a fellowship in molecular biology at the University of Pennsylvania in 2001, a residency in general surgery and his surgical critical care fellowship at Milton Hershey Medical Center in 2002, and an endocrine surgery fellowship at Columbia University Medical Center in 2006.
He is board certified in surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, nonprofit organization founded in 1937 to provide board certification to individuals who have met a defined standard of education, training and knowledge in the field of surgery.
Additionally, Dr. Shifrin is an Endocrine Surgeon and Surgical Director of the Center for Thyroid, Parathyroid and Adrenal Diseases at Jersey Shore University Medical Center. He is also a Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He is board certified by American Board of Surgery, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Endocrinology. He is the first, and the only US Endocrine Surgeon who was admitted and successfully passed the European Board Exam in Endocrine Surgery, as there is no such exam is available in the US.. He was given the title of a Fellow of the European Board of Surgery in 2018, and one of the first elected Fellows of the International Society of Surgery.
He is an Elected Member of the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons, the European Society of Endocrine Surgeons, and the International Association of Endocrine Surgeons. He is Board Certified in Endocrine Neck Ultrasound and Ultrasound Guided Thyroid Biopsy by American College of Endocrinology. He was also elected as a Vice President of the New Jersey Chapter of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists.
