Dr. Elizabeth Chiang is an Opthalmologist and fellowship trained Oculoplastic surgeon practicing in Painesville, Ohio at Ice Ophtalmology. She graduated with honors from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena, Earning a BS in Engineering and Applied Sciences. She then attended the Medical Scientist Training Program at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, earning her medical degree and PhD in Neuroscience.
She completed her internship in preliminary medicine at Akron General Medical Center before starting her Ophthalmology residency at Northwestern University. Elizabeth completed a two year fellowship in Oculoplastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Eye Institute at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) in Milwaukee.
Dr. Chiang loves to travel and has been to over 40 countries and 6 continents. She hopes to go to Antarctica soon (the trip was canceled due to the COVID pandemic). She has also traveled to 48 of the 50 states. She is also an avid photographer, which goes hand and hand with her love of travel. When she’s closer to home, Dr. Chiang enjoys outdoor activities like hiking and kayaking.

What causes pain in your eye after cataract surgery?
Most people do not have pain after cataract surgery. If you are having pain, there are multiple possible causes of pain to the eye after cataract surgery. Your eye pressure may be high, this is checked between 3 hours and 1 day after cataract surgery. You may have a corneal abrasion or other changes to the surface of the eye that can cause a range of sensations from mild discomfort, tearing, feeling of sand in the eye to intense pain. Everyone has some inflammation after cataract surgery, depending on the amount of inflammation, this may be another cause of pain or discomfort. How can you prevent cataracts from getting worse?

Can you get an eye infection from swimming?
Yes, it is possible to get an eye infection from swimming. Even worse, you could get an orbital infection which can put your vision at risk. Swimming in lakes and natural bodies of water have higher risk for infection. The overall risk of infection is still low. However, it is best to avoid swimming in natural bodies of water that may have high bacteria count. How do I know when I need cataract surgery?
Cataract surgery is done when a cataract decreases vision enough to affect a person's activities of daily living. If your cataract decreases your vision to the point where you are having difficulty driving, reading, or do other activities you do daily, then it is time to have cataract surgery. General rules of thumb are when your vision is worse than 20/50, even when wearing glasses or contact lenses to correct your vision. If you have poor vision but the reason for the poor vision is not the cataract, then removing the cataract may not improve the vision. READ MORE

Can too much screen time damage your eyes?
Screen time doesn't really damage your eyes. However, people tend to blink less when looking at screens so their eyes can become dry. Looking at screens late at night can also disrupt your circadian rhythm (but doesn't actually damage the eyes), keeping you awake when you should be feeling sleepy. There is some research to suggest that if children spend a lot of time staring at close up objects (like screens), that they may be more likely to become nearsighted and need to wear glasses, but this is not substantiated.
