Get to know Hematologist-Oncologist Dr. Clarence Sarkodee Adoo, who serves patients in Arizona.

Specializing in hematology, oncology and internal medicine, Dr. Adoo joined Arizona Center for Cancer Care in 2008. He sees patients at the offices in Avondale and Glendale, Arizona.

Some of the doctor’s areas of specialization include treatment of cancer, leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma; diseases of the blood, including blood clots, bleeding disorders, anemia and abnormalities of white and red blood cells, platelets, and plasma; blood transfusion therapy; and bone marrow transplant medicine.

Pertaining to his educational background, Dr. Adoo received his undergraduate degree from Achimota School Sixth Form College in Ghana. He earned his medical degree from the University of Ghana Medical School, and completed his internship and residency at the St. Agnes Hospital, where he would eventually serve as the chief resident. Finally, he completed a fellowship at the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s Greenebaum Cancer Center.

With a focus on compassionate state-of-the-art cancer care, he is board-certified in internal medicine, medical oncology, and hematology by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Honored as a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP) and lauded by America’s Registry of Outstanding Professionals, Dr. Adoo is a member of the American Society of Internal Medicine, the American Association of Blood Banks, the American Society of Hematology, and the American Society of Clinical Oncologists, amongst others.

His hospital affiliations include West Hills Hospital and Medical Center, Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, LAC-Olive View-UCLA Medical Center, and Providence Tarzana Medical Center.

Hematology is the branch of medicine concerned with the study of the cause, prognosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases related to blood. Oncology is a branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. A hematologist-oncologist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of cancer, malignant blood diseases such as leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma, and blood disorders such as iron-deficiency anemia, clotting abnormalities, hemophilia, and sickle-cell disease.

Throughout his fruitful career, Dr. Adoo has publications in several journals and authored many chapters in books, including Acute Myeloid Leukemia, Alternative Management Strategies in Alloimmunized Thrombocytopenic Patients, Infection in the Neutropenic Host, Management of infection in Oncology Patients and Adult Leukemia: American Cancer Society Atlas. 

In addition to his published work, he has participated in several presentations at the Hematology Oncology Fellowship Program, National Institute of Health, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society/Cure for Lymphoma Association, and Phoenix Veterans Affairs Hospital.

On a more personal note, he speaks multiple languages, including English, Farsi, and French.
