Utilizing a holistic approach when dealing with the complex and challenging mental health disorders of children, Dr. Taskiran uses evidence-based psychotherapy techniques such as cognitive behavioral therapy for children, mindfulness and mentalization-based approaches for adolescents, as well as psychopharmacological treatments. He also has extensive experience with college mental health problems and is interested in adjustment problems, especially in cross-cultural settings.

In regards to the doctor’s educational background, he earned his medical degree from Hacettepe University School of Medicine in Ankara, Turkey. Upon relocating to the United States, he completed his internship in psychiatry and his residency in general psychiatry at Yale University. This was followed by a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at the NYU Child Study Center.

Throughout the years, Dr. Taskiran has had the opportunity to teach and mentor child and adolescent psychiatry fellows, psychiatry residents, and medical students. He helped establish the child and adolescent psychiatry department and educational curriculum of Koc University School of Medicine, and still serves there as an Assistant Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and as the Director of Mental Health and Counseling Services. He also serves as an attending psychiatrist at the American Hospital in Istanbul.

Among his various achievements, he is board-certified in general psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, which is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to promoting high-quality patient care for the public through the initial and continuing certification of psychiatrists and neurologists.  

Committed to his profession, Dr. Taskiran has been involved in research investigating face-emotion recognition in children with severe mood dysregulation, as well as emotional and social predictors of functioning in people with attentional disorders. His research experience has given him a deeper understanding of the issues of children with disruptive behavior disorders in home and school environments.

What’s more, he has served as a Voluntary Expert Consultant at the School for Autistic Children of Bursa (2012), organized the “Psychiatry of Chronic Diseases in Children” workshop at Hacettepe University’s Faculty of Medicine (2001), and served as the Project Officer of Peer Educator on the Turkish Medical Students International Committee (1998-2001).
