Get to know Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon Daria Hamrah, DMD, who serves patients in McLean, Virginia.

Specializing in the treatment of problems related to the face, mouth, and jaws, Dr. Hamrah is a triple board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon. He is the Founder & Medical Director of NOVA SurgiCare, PC in McLean, Virginia.

He performs a variety of surgical procedures and non-surgical solutions in the facial region. These include a wide variety of facial cosmetic surgery procedures to meet aesthetic goals, reconstructive jaw surgery to treat facial traumas, provide bone grafting, and perform sinus lifts with dental implants, treatment of TMD through surgical means, and oral surgery procedures to provide patients with a healthy, aesthetically pleasing mouth, including periodontal surgery.

While Dr. Hamrah’s extensive qualifications and experience are more than enough to provide countless patients with the confidence needed to pursue his services, he also maintains a unique philosophy on facial cosmetic surgery that sets him apart from other cosmetic surgeons. He approaches cosmetic surgery from the inside out, meaning he considers bone structure, as well as any visible sagging, asymmetry, wrinkles, and undesirable facial contours.

To him, facial surgery is much like making up a bed nicely – if the mattress is lumpy, there isn’t much point in spreading a nice bed cover over it – that is, if the bones are problematic, fixing the skin doesn’t help much.

“Ever since I was a kid I loved helping others. I know it sounds cliché but thinking back, that’s what I remember. When someone got hurt, I was the first to get a Band-Aid and put it on the wound. If two people were in a quarrel, I found joy in trying to help resolve their problems. Looking at what brings me joy today, it’s the same reason that motivates me to treat my patients every day – compassion! I always thought I became a doctor because my father was a doctor, but when I was asked by a student a few years ago the same question (why did you become a doctor?), I had to dig deep. When I went all the way back to my childhood, it became very clear to me that it was the joy of helping others to feel better physically and mentally!” as stated by Dr. Hamrah.

Growing up in Cologne, Germany, he received his Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry (DMD) degree from the prestigious Johannes-Gutenberg University in Mainz. He graduated at the top of his class with honors. Following graduation, he moved to Boston, Massachusetts to pursue a postdoctoral fellowship in oral pathology at Harvard University. His training focused primarily on head and neck cancer.

After Harvard, Dr. Hamrah continued his training at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Loyola University of Chicago, and Loyola University Medical Center, where he completed his internships in anesthesia and oral & maxillofacial surgery. He then spent four vigorous years training under the world-renowned surgeon, Dr. Robert E. Marx, at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine/Jackson Memorial Hospital. His training included a heavy emphasis on tumor and reconstructive surgery of the head and neck.

Wanting to further his education, he completed a fellowship in facial cosmetic surgery with the UT Southwestern Medical School. This fellowship involved an entire year devoted to cosmetic surgery of the face.

A Fellow of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery and a Fellow of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery, the doctor is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, the American Board of Facial Cosmetic Surgery, and the National Dental Board of Anesthesiology. He also holds a Cosmetic Surgery Procedures Certification and License from the Commonwealth of Virginia, Department of Health Professions.

To ensure his patients’ safety, Dr. Hamrah is certified in BLS (Basic Life Support), ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support), and PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support). He is also one of the co-founders of “Alegria” – a California foundation for the treatment of cleft lip and palate – and travels to Colombia annually to perform charity surgery for indigent children with facial deformities.

Focusing on cosmetic and reconstructive procedures of the head and neck, Dr. Hamrah has been engaged in the oral & maxillofacial surgery field for the past 15 years. He is one of few maxillofacial surgeons to hold a license to practice Facial Cosmetic Surgery in the state of Virginia. Furthermore, he has full oral & maxillofacial surgery and facial plastic/cosmetic surgery privileges at Virginia Hospital Center (formerly Arlington Hospital) and is on active staff within the Department of Surgery.

Oral and maxillofacial surgery specializes in surgery of the face, mouth, and jaws. It is an internationally recognized surgical specialty. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are dental specialists who treat conditions, defects, injuries, and esthetic aspects of the mouth, teeth, jaws, and face. Their training involves a four-year graduate degree in dentistry and the completion of a minimum four-year hospital surgical residency program.

The Consumers’ Research Council of America voted Dr. Hamrah as one of America’s top surgeons. He has also been voted as the Top Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon by The Washingtonian and was selected as Top Doctor in Facial Cosmetic Surgery by patient reviews in D.C.
