What is a Physiatrist? What is a Physiatrist? Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) physicians, also known as physiatrists, treat a wide variety of medical conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves, bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, and tendons. PM&R physicians are medical doctors who have completed training in the specialty of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R), and may be subspecialty certified in Brain Injury Medicine, Hospice and Palliative Medicine, Neuromuscular Medicine, Pain Medicine, Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine, Spinal Cord Injury Medicine, and/or Sports Medicine. Specifically, PM&R physicians: Treat patients of all ages Focus treatment on function Have a broad medical expertise that allows them to treat disabling conditions throughout a person’s lifetime Diagnose and treat pain as a result of an injury, illness, or disabling condition Determine and lead a treatment/prevention plan Lead a team of medical professionals, which may include physical therapists, occupational therapists, and physician extenders to optimize patient care Work with other physicians, which may include primary care physicians, neurologists, orthopedic surgeons, and many others. Get to know Psychiatrist Dr. Cynthia V. Satchell, who serves patients in Denver, Colorado.
A board-certified psychiatrist, Dr. Satchell has been in private practice in Denver since 1992. Her emphasis is on developing an understanding of my clients as complex, multidimensional beings. In providing treatment for emotional distress of any kind, her efforts are directed towards facilitating health in a manner inclusive of considerations of the physical, psychologic, neurobiologic, and beyond.
Holding a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of California, Davis, she graduated with her medical degree from the Washington University School of Medicine. She then went on to complete her internship at the Saint Mary’s Health Center, and her residency in psychiatry at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. Later, she completed additional training in psychoanalysis at the Denver Institute of Psychoanalysis.
An expert in her field, Dr. Satchell is a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). The ABPN is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to serving the professions of psychiatry and neurology.
With a passion for teaching, she serves as a Clinical Instructor of Psychiatry at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. She also teaches and runs study groups regarding early childhood development as it pertains to attachment, emotion regulation, susceptibility to traumatic experience and the development of later emerging psychological difficulties and mental illness.
