Dr. Gottschalk is a pediatric orthopedic surgeon whose subspecialty interests include treatment of adult and pediatric hand and upper extremity disorders, including fractures, sports injuries, and congenital disorders. He is a part of the team at Central Texas Pediatric Orthopedics in Austin, Texas, where he practices with the mission of providing one’s family with the very best orthopedic care in the most compassionate way possible.

“The hardest part of this job is that once you help a child get better, they no longer need you! At the end of the day, it is all about improving the quality of life for our patients. I love hearing from parents months and years after an injury. Seeing children achieve their goals and dreams makes all the hard work worth it!” as stated by the doctor.

Alongside his clinical role, he is an affiliate faculty member in the Department of Surgery and Perioperative Care at Dell Medical School in Austin. He is also the Chief of Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery at Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas and the Medical Director at Strictly Pediatric Surgery Center.

The doctor’s acclaimed career in medicine began after he earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He then went on to complete his internship in general surgery and his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. He served as a Senior Registrar in Orthopedics at Norfolk & Norwich University, after which he completed his pediatric orthopedic and scoliosis fellowship at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego, California. He also completed a hand fellowship (pediatric and adult) at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, Illinois.

A Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and a Pediatric Orthopedic Society of North America, he is board-certified through the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS). The ABOS is an organization with the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for orthopedic residents and surgeons as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopedic surgeons.

To advance his professional efforts, Dr. Gottschalk remains a member of numerous organizations, including the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, the American Association for Hand Surgery, the Travis County Medical Society, and the Pediatric Hand Study Group.

Furthermore, he remains active academically by presenting research and giving talks both nationally and internationally. He has written multiple articles and book chapters ranging from hand and upper extremity trauma to rare congenital conditions as well as sports-related wrist injuries.

Orthopedic surgery or orthopedics, also spelled orthopaedics, is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Pediatric orthopedic surgeons diagnose, treat, and manage children’s musculoskeletal problems such as limb and spine deformities noted at birth or later in life (clubfoot, scoliosis, limb length differences), gait abnormalities (limping), and broken bones.
