Dr. McElgunn is a well-respected, board-certified dermatologist in the United States and in Canada. He joined Piedmont Plastic Surgery & Dermatology in 2006 and became a partner in 2007. He sees patients of all ages for all dermatology concerns at the office in Blakeney, North Carolina.

Treating patients with lasers since the early 1980’s, he has extensive experience in laser surgery. He has taught laser surgery and has been an examiner of prospective laser surgeons for the American Board of Laser Surgery. With equally extensive experience in cosmetic fillers, Dr. McElgunn is recognized as a premier injector of Botox®, Dysport®, Restylane®, Juvederm®, Voluma®, and other fillers. He instructs other dermatologists and plastic surgeons in filler injection techniques and dermatologic therapies. 

Licensed by the State Board of North Carolina, he holds hospital privileges at Carolinas Medical Center, Carolinas Rehabilitation, University Medical Center, Novant Health Matthews Medical Center, and Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center.

Previously, Dr. McElgunn had a private practice in the Toronto area for many years. Subsequently, he accepted a position at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions where he was the Founding Director of the Johns Hopkins Dermatology and Cosmetic Center. He was an integral member of the dermatology department where he taught dermatology residents surgical skills and cosmetic procedures. He was voted Teacher of the Year in 2004. 

Other past professional positions include President of the Maryland Dermatological Society, Founding President of the Ontario Dermatology Association, President of the Canadian Society for Dermatologic Surgery, and Vice President of the Canadian Dermatology Association.

In regards to his educational background, Dr. McElgunn graduated with both his Bachelor of Arts degree and his medical degree from the University of Alberta in 1975 and 1977, respectively. He also holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Toronto.

In addition to being a Fellow of The Royal College of Physicians of Canada (FRCPC), he is a member of the American Academy of Dermatology, the American Society of Dermatological Surgery, the Mecklenburg Medical Society, the Charlotte Dermatological Society, the North Carolina Dermatological Association,and the South Carolina Dermatological Association.

Certified through the National Board of Medical Examiners, he is Diplomate of both the American Board of Dermatology (1982) and the American Board of Laser Surgery (1985).
