Get to know Oncologist Dr. Yan Zhou, who serves patients in Houston, Texas.

Being a board-certified oncologist, Dr. Zhou has inpatient, consulting, and outpatient experience in the diagnosis and treatment of hematologic conditions, solid tumors, and hematologic malignancies. She is currently a part of the team at Houston Cancer Institute in Houston, Texas.

There, Dr. Maria Scouros, her associates, and staff provide specialized diagnostic and treatment capabilities for patients with many different types of cancer. At Houston Cancer Institute, developing a treatment plan for each patient is a highly individualized and personal process.

Throughout her academic career, Dr. Zhou earned her medical degree from the Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences in China. She also received her Doctorate (PhD) degree in Oncologic Pharmacology and her Master of Science (MS) degree in Clinical pharmacology from the same educational venue. Upon relocating to the United States, she received comprehensive training in internal medicine with rotations at four teaching facilities, including Mountain Home VA Medical Center.

Thereafter, she went on to complete her fellowship in medical oncology at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, where she participated in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of common solid tumors, benign hematologic conditions, and hematologic malignancies. 

Following her education, she became board-certified in both internal medicine and medical oncology by the American Board of Internal Medicine, a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world. 

Prior to her clinical training, Dr. Zhou served as a Research Scientist, Postdoctoral and Pre-doctoral Fellow within the Department of Molecular Pathology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. She planned, organized, coordinated, and participated in scientific research projects focusing on evaluating potential effects of several novel anticancer agents in the laboratory.

Oncology is a branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. A medical professional who practices oncology is an oncologist. An oncologist is a doctor who treats cancer and provides medical care for a person diagnosed with cancer. They lead a cancer treatment team of various healthcare professionals, treat patients with radiation therapy, coordinate treatment plans and prescribe various types of treatment, including chemotherapy and immunotherapy, as well as assist patients with pain management.

Happily married with one child, Dr. Zhou enjoys spending time with her family when she is not working. She also enjoys traveling, listening to music, and singing.
