Get to know General Surgeon Dr. Gerald Mckinney, who serves patients in Jackson, Mississippi.

Well-versed in the field of general surgery, Dr. McKinney is in practice at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, joining the faculty in January, 2014.

“Being a healthcare provider is a privileged position. Individuals provide a tremendous amount of trust in us and share the most intimate aspects of their lives. As a result we must treat them with the utmost respect and dignity. Each patient should be treated as a whole; mind, body, spirit and soul. These can not be separated. This requires good communication from the healthcare provider, a willingness to listen and a desire to serve” stated the doctor.

Obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Morehouse College, he graduated with his medical degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago. He then returned to Atlanta and completed his residency in general surgery at the Morehouse School of Medicine, and remained as faculty to his fellowship in minimally invasive surgery. 

Subsequently, he joined a multispecialty group in Michigan City, Indiana, followed by 10 years on faculty at the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine.

Recognized as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), the doctor is board-certified in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.

General surgery is a surgical specialty that focuses on abdominal contents including the esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, appendix and bile ducts, and often the thyroid gland. A general surgeon performs a wide range of abdominal surgeries for many forms of intestinal and abdominal wall neoplasms, gallbladder disease, gastric and pancreatic disease. They follow the patient through critical care and surgical recovery all the way to outpatient care.
